About the Kentucky Derby
There is no racetrack like Chuchill Downs. Steeped in history and legendary past champions there is no experience like the Kentucky Derby... The fastest 2 minutes in sports. The twin spires are recognized across the horse racing world and the racetrack recently underwent a facelift to add more seating a luxury boxes. The racetrack is popular throughout the thoroughbred season, but nothing like the first weekend in May. If you can't make it to Kentucky, consider curling up with a mint julip... Just dont try to sing Old Kentucky Home after you've had a few!

How to Bet on Horses

Kentucky Derby Betting Tips

  • Find a good racebook! Weigh deposit bonuses with rebates and enhanced track odds, if offered!
  • Look beyond the hype. Favorites do win many races, but have not been kind in the Kentucky Derby. In general, favorites return very low on investment.
  • Go back in time... has the horse won any races? Did they win any of the major triple crown prep races? If they have never won a major race, they probably will not win the Kentucky Derby.
  • Pick a few middle-of-the-pack horses and bet them "across the board" - meaning a win, place, and show bet on each horse. If you do this for 3 or 4 horses at $2 per bet, it will cost under $25 and gives you an excellent chance to win something. Plus, you have a bunch of horses to root for!
  • Look at the exacta and trifecta bets. Kentucky derby trifectas can pay huge sums of money if you are willing to bet the longshots. Play $2 and think of it like a lottery ticket (not likely to win, but would pay off if you win) or wheel or key horses to increase your chances of winning.
  • Dont bet the horses until as short a time before post. Odds change regularly - and you are paid based on the odds when the betting windows close.
  • Pay attention to moving odds in the 3 hours before the race. This is when the big time bettors start staking money in quantity and volume to sway the odds. These big horse bettors sometimes have some insider info - whether it is how a horse is feeling or worked out or how the horses deal with the track conditions

Mint Julep Recipe
You need:

  • Fresh mint sprigs
  • Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of water
  • Ice
  • Good Kentucky Bourbon
Directions:
Place a few mint sprigs in the bottom of your glass and dust with powdered sugar. Add just enough water to dissolve the sugar. Crush the mint in the mixture. Fill the cup with ice and pour as much bourbon as you like on top! If you like, garnish with fresh mint. Give a few minutes for the flavors to meld and frost to form on the glass!

My Old Kentucky Home
By Stephen Foster

The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home,
Tis summer, the people are gay;
The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music all the day.

The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
All merry, all happy and bright;
By'n by hard times comes a knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky home, Good-night!

Weep no more my lady. Oh! Weep no more today!
We will sing one song for my old Kentucky home
For the old Kentucky home, far away.
