Betting on Totals
What is a total?
A total is another way of betting on a game. A total is the number of points (goals, runs, etc) scored by both teams combined for a given contest. You make a bet based on whether you think the total points scored will be OVER or UNDER the number set by the sportsbook. How do I bet on a total?
It's easy... Simply see the offered total and decide how you want to bet:Over - You think more points than the total will be scored
Under - You do not think that many points will be scored.
Give me an example?
San Francisco at St. Louis: Over/Under at 41The odds are risk $1.10 to win $1.00 (-110) unless otherwise indicated.
- For the player who wagers on Over 41, the total points scored by adding both team's scores, including overtime, must be more than 41
- For the player who wagers on Under 41, the total points scored by adding both team's scores, including overtime, must be less than 41
- If the outcome falls on the number, either way, the bet is declared a "Push", and the original stake is refunded
What happens if the total points actually scored is the same as the sportsbook total?
The bet would be considered a push. Your risk amount would be returned to you.Is there an advantage to picking one side of the other?
Surprisingly, yes! Recently, sports have been favoring betting "under" - but not by much! The chart below shows actual data by each sport for the most recent season. The advantage isn't clearly defined where you could be all games and come out ahead, so bet wisely! It is human nature to prefer picking over, so be careful.Follow WageringSports On:
