The Three Seasons of NCAA Football and What to Look For
College football basically can be broken down into three seasons. The first part of the season is the non-conference early season part of the schedule. This is where it is important to spot teams that are from smaller conferences that are underrated. You can take advantage of knowing this info when they play mediocre teams from the bigger conferences. The second portion of the season is conference games. The info that you get from out of conference games will, many times, result in against the spread (ATS) and straight up wins in conference play. Last but not least is the college Bowl season, which is only one game, but hey there are a lot of games. Gotta Check the Stats Baby There are a few methods of college football handicapping that you should look into. Some obvious things that you need to take into consideration are defensive stats and offensive stats. You have to look at such things as a team’s total yards per games, passing and rushing yards per game, and points scored per game. On the defensive side you need to look at a team’s yards allowed, passing and rushing yards allowed, and total points allowed per game. It is also a good idea to look into the strength of schedule of a team entering conference play and how strong the team’s conference is. There’s No Place Like Home In NCAA football home field advantage is HUGE. For example, it is very hard for road teams on Saturday night in games in the south, especially in the big conferences, because that is THE place to be for the students. The crowds are huge and rowdy. When looking to handicap a game look at a team’s home record for the past couple of seasons, not matter what their overall record is. Conversely, you need to check out road records of teams. If you are looking to bet on a road underdog make sure that the team you want to wager on can play D and run the ball. Those are the two aspects that can take the crowd out of a game. Look at Trends When it comes time for conference play the past performance of a team can be very telling about an upcoming game. There are some teams that always play well against certain teams on the road and some that just can’t win against conference rivals. For example, let’s say a team from a big conference, such as Tennessee from the SEC, struggled against a couple of smaller teams from smaller conferences in the beginning of the season. Even though they won they may get crushed when playing their first couple of games in the SEC since all teams in the conference are, generally, pretty good. Past performances of a team can give you a great deal of info about an upcoming game. Check out coaching staff changes, for example, as trends can show you a lot after a few weeks of the college football season.
