Have Good Money Management

Perhaps the most important thing to successful sports betting is the right money management. If you want to win money in the long term when wagering on sports you have to be smart with your money management. Nothing will drain your bankroll quicker then having poor money management skills. Typically you will want to bet 2% to 3% of your bankroll for each wager. You can bet more, but only if you are winning, as you do not want to hedge your bets, which will be touched on later. If you increase your bets if you hit a losing streak it will hurt you later on. Even if you are winning it is a good idea to never bet more than 5% of your bankroll on a single bet, no matter how much of a lock you think it is.

Never Chase Losses

A big mistake that many sports bettors make is chasing or hedging their bets in order to make up for what they lost. If you bet 2% of your bankroll on a few bets and lose them all do not increase your bets significantly to win the money back. This is the quickest way for you to lose money. Many times people do this on Sunday night or Monday night games after they got killed during the NFL weekend. If you want to win money when wagering on sports, never ever chase your losses, but rather win back tour losses one game at a time.

Bet Online with a Level Head

When you wager online never go into your account if you are drunk or not in the right state of mind. If you do it will increase the chance that you will not only make stupid bets, but bigger ones as well. You never want to get up the following morning and find that you made a huge bet or bad bet. Many times you have to be level headed to find a good value bet and this is obviously much harder of you are not in the right state of mind or have tipped back a few beers or cocktails.

Pay Attention to the Odds

This may seem obvious, but many beginning sports bettors do not do this. Look hard at the odds when you are trying to find either the team or total you think is attractive. Shopping for lines helps you out in long term winning, however it can be difficult for some bettors to see why it is vital to look for the best line. There is a big difference in how much money you make if you find the best line possible.

Don’t Get Caught in the Trap

You have to look out for what they call trap games. These types of games are ones that have lines that look too good to be true. This can be the case even though you have looked at such things as injuries or other angles. If you see a line that looks too good to be true, like with anything else, it probably is. Usually a sportsbook wants bettors to wager on the trap game, but they really are getting most people to bet how they want.
