NASCAR Betting 101

NASCAR betting is not difficult to do, as there are only four real wagering types that you can bet. The four different wagering types are odds to win, match ups, futures, and proposition bets (aka prop bets).

Odds to Win

The odds to win bet is the easiest NASCAR bet that you can make. Basically, you are just picking the driver who you think that will win the race. The odds bet have good odds for most drivers, as it is very hard to pick the one driver that will take the checkered flag. Besides odds on drivers you will usually see a Field bet as well, which means that any driver not listed by the sportsbook will win the race. For example, if you bet $10 on the field bet with odds of 8/1 in the Daytona 500 and no driver listed on the sportsbook that you wager with wins the race, you will then win $80. However, the field bet is hard to hit, as all the race favorites will tend to have odds posted.

Match Ups – Head to Head

Match Up wagers let you choose driver against driver in a certain race. In a match up wager you will see such odds as Jimmy Johnson +100 vs. Jeff Gordon -130. The + in front of Johnson means that he is the underdog in the match up and the + in front of the number shows how much you have to bet in order to win $100. You have to remember that you get your original bet of $100 back if you win the bet. The – shows that Gordon is the favorite and how much money you have to bet in order to show a profit of $100 with the bet. Obviously, if the favorite wins, you will bet back the $130 that you originally bet.

Future Bets

Future bets are just what the name says as you will be betting on a NASCAR future. The main futures bet is the winner of the Nextel Cup and the end of the NASCAR season. You can make the future bet on the driver that you think will win the Nextel Cup. You can make this bet throughout the NASCAR season, but depending on how the driver is currently doing in the standings will determine the odds that you get. You can get good odds before the season starts. However, if Jeff Gordon has a legit lead in the points race, you will not get good futures odds on him in the middle of the season.

Proposition Bets (AKA Prop Bets)

Prop bets are bets that really do not have to do with one race and can be more fun, such as brand of car that wins the most races or manufacturer that will win the Daytona 500. There are many prop bets that can be posted, but the bigger the race the more prop bets that you will find posted.
