It is rare when there is a year where both New York teams are not in the playoff race. To show how legit New York is as a sports city you can take away the Yankees 26 titles and the Big Apple would still be in the top 5. The New Yankees Stadium, which opened for the 2009 season, is a sight to behold and the Yankees won the World Series in their first season there.

OK, so New York is close to Canada, but it is still south of North of the Border, yet the city still boasts an impressive 9 Stanley Cup championships, as the Islanders have 4 and the Rangers have 4. The Islanders won 4 straight Cups (1980 - 1983) with legendary coach Al Arbour on the bench. The Rangers have one more championships and they also play at, perhaps, the best sports venue in the U.S. in the Madison Square Garden.

New Yorkers love their football and they have to pick between rooting for the Giants or the Jets. The Big 4 sports are not the only ones that are in New York, as the New York Red Bulls from Major League Soccer call the Big Apple their home. The annual New York City marathon is one of the biggest marathon events in the world and attracts the best long distance runners from across the planet. Many think and could make a legit argument that New York City is the birthplace of street ball hoops and you can always find great games going on in the many parks in the city, especially in the legendary Rucker Park on 155th street in Harlem.

Every year at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens the U.S. Open takes place, which is the 4th and final major of the year. Tennis fans flock here every summer to take in some of the best tennis on the planet watching all the best player vie for the prestigious title. It is also home to Belmont Park, where each June the third leg of the triple crown in thoroughbred horse racing is run.
