Will Tony Stewart Win at Watkins Glen this Sunday?

Alright girls and gents, it’s time for my first picks. Those of you that are NASCAR fans know who won yesterday. Greg Biffle took the checkered flag, followed by Tony Stewart, and Carl Edwards. Rain was a major factor and hopefully we won’t have that situation this Sunday when the Sprint Cup Series continues at Watkins Glen International Raceway.
With 2.45 miles and 11 turns, fans are definitely in for a show. Last year, Tony Stewart was the victor. If Stewart does what he did this week, then he just might bring home the win to make it victory number 5 in the past 7 years; but is there a creature lurking in the deep that might just steal Stewart’s thunder?
Based on how this year is going and the past with the track, here are my top 20 picks for Watkins Glen on Sunday, August 8, 2010:

1. Tony Stewart
2. Jimmy Johnson
3. Matt Kenseth
4. Denny Hamlin
5. Jeff Gordon
6. Kevin Harvick
7. Jeff Burton
8. Karl Edwards
9. Kyle Busch
10. Clint Boyer
11. Kurt Busch
12. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
13. Mark Martin
14. David Reutimann
15. Juan Pablo Montoya
16. Kasey Kahne
17. Jaime McMurray
18. Ryan Newman
19. Joey Logano
20. Martin Truex, Jr.
Let’s see how this weekend goes and see everyone at the starting line!

Daytona Shootout Preview

Well, another NASCAR season is about to begin with the first event of the season in the Budweiser Daytona Shootout from Daytona International Speedway.

It is interesting that Jimmy Johnson will be going for his 5th straight Sprint Cup Championship title, but he does not even have the best odds to win this unique race. Why unique? OK, well first of all it is a select event of drivers and the format is different. The Daytona Shootout is an exhibition race that includes drivers that were in the Chase for the Champions last season as well as winners of the races of the Coke Zero 500, Daytona 500, and the Budweiser Shootout. Also in the field for this event are the Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year and the pole winners from races last season.

The format of the Daytona Shootout is unique, as it is a 2-segment race, where in the 1st segment drivers will race for 25 laps, will then take a 10-minute intermission break, and then race to the finish line after 50 more laps.

Here are some of the drivers that have the best odds to win the Daytona Shootout. The odds come from one of the leading sportsbooks on the Net today.

Both Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart have the best odds, as each is at 7/1. Stewart has won this race 3 times in his career and is always a threat to take the checkered flag. Busch has never won this event, but he did win the big daddy in the Daytona 500 in 2008. He has raced in 5 of these shootouts and in 4 of those races he did finish in the top 5. Maybe this is the year he finally wins.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is at 8/1 and he has won this event twice the first in 2003 and then again in 2008. He has also won 2 other events on this track and in 20 career races at Daytona he has been solid finishing in the top 10 an impressive 11 times.

Jeff Gordon had a bit of a resurgence last season and he looks to start this season off strong. He has odds of 8/1 and he has won this event twice, but it has been a while, as the first win came in 1994 and then again in 1997. In his career Gordon has raced in 34 events on the Daytona track and he has placed well winning 6 times and has finished in the top 10 half of the time (17).

The reigning Sprint Cup champion Jimmy Johnson is at 8/1 to win this year’s Daytona Shootout. He won the shootout in 2005 and in 16 races at the Daytona International Speedway he has finished in the top 10 9 times.

Here is the full list of odds for the Daytona Shootout.

Tony Stewart 7/1
Kyle Busch 7/1
Dale Earnhardt Jr 8/1
Jeff Gordon 8/1
Jimmie Johnson 8/1
Denny Hamlin 10/1
Mark Martin 12/1
Carl Edwards 12/1
Kurt Busch 12/1
Juan Pablo Montoya 12/1
Kevin Harvick 12/1
Jeff Burton 18/1
Matt Kenseth 18/1
Ryan Newman 20/1
Kasey Kahne 25/1
Field (Any Other Driver) 25/1
Brian Vickers 25/1
Joey Logano 30/1
Greg Biffle 30/1
Jamie McMurray 30/1

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pepsi 500 Preview And Pick

Three races down, seven to go.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase for the Cup is well underway, and this week sees stock car racing’s best and brightest take to Fontana’s Auto Club Speedway for the second time this season for this afternoon’s Pepsi 500.

Ageless wonder Mark Martin comes into the race with an 18-point lead over Jimmie Johnson in the Chase standings, with Juan Pablo Montoya 51 back in third and pre-Chase points ‘champion’ Tony Stewart 67 points and well in the mix behind after winning last week at Kansas.

The February race in Fontana was won by Matt Kenseth, who followed up his Daytona 500 win by beating out Jeff Godon for the win.

Unfortunately, Kenseth’s season went south after that, and I can’t say that I see him pulling off the season sweep today.

The man on the pole for today’s race is Denny Hamin, who sits sixth, 99 points behind Martin. Hamlin finished sixth at Fontana in Februray, and he’s well positioned to post an even better result today, which would keep him welin striking distance in the Chase.

The last time I picked a race was a few weeks ago at Dover, and my pick for that race was Johnson, who duly made good on my pick of him by taking the checkered flag.

As it so happens, Johnson is the two-time defending champion of the Pepsi 500.

He came through for me before, and I thinl he’ll do so yet again today.

Dover sweep in the cards for #48

It’s worth noting that I’m posting on my Blackberry since I’m on the road (again – this explains the posting inconsistencies as of late, which I apologize profusely for), but I wanted to chime in on today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and give a quick pick, close to race time as it may be.

Jimmie Johnson is on the pole for today’s race at Dover, and the three-time defending series champ comes into the second Chase race trailing teammate, points leader, and sentimental favorite Mark Martin by 35 points.

Martin came into the Chase atop the standings by virtue of his four wins, and he notched his series-leading fifth win last week in New Hampshire to further increase his lead.

While it finally may be Martin’s year, today is going to be Jimmie’s day. It’s been a quiet-ish season for JJ, despite three wins, and one of those three wins came at Dover earlier this season in a performance that saw him lead nearly 300 laps and wind up his fourth win there. He may not lead 300 laps at the Monster Mile this time around, but if he can avoid trouble and misfortune this afternoon, I don’t see anyone stopping him from taking the checkered flag..
