Belmont Stakes Wrapup

First off, I apologize if you were on the Big Brown bandwagon. What a load of crap (pun intended) he turned in! I think many folks learned a valuable lesson- never is a horse with 25 cents on the dollar! Cracked hooves aside – it was 90+ degrees, drew a bad post, and the horse was not in his usual training schedule.

Just before the race, I was asked how I’d bet. I said I’d bet on the 8 non-favored horses (“across the board”) If I made $2 bets, it would have cost $48 (8 horses, 3 bets on each). I would have won that back many times over! I admittedly probably would have backed that up by an exacta keying on big brown to win (any of the 8 horses to finish second).

An interesting note – the official scorer has Anak Nakal and Read’s Echo in a dead heat. Thus, they both are considered either the 3rd or 4th place horse. Really shakes up those trifectas and superfectas!

$1,000,000 Belmont S. – Grade 1

Pgm Horse Win Place Show
6 Da’ Tara $79.00 $28.00 $14.80
4 Denis of Cork   $5.40 $4.10
8 Anak Nakal (DH)     $6.20
9 Ready’s Echo (DH)     $6.20

Other Bets

$2 Exacta (6-4) Paid $659.00
$2 Trifecta (6-4-8) Paid $3,703.00
$2 Trifecta (6-4-9) Paid $3,954.00
$2 Superfecta (6-4-8-9) Paid $48,637.00
$2 Superfecta (6-4-9-8) Paid $47,309.00

Next major horse racing event which gets much press is the Breeder’s cup in the fall.

Belmont Odds

Big Brown drew the #1 post – along the inside rail.  I see this as a major disadvantage, especially on such a long race.  That position is going to force Big Brown to break out of the gates and get to the head of the pack…. and probably lead wire to wire – not an easy task, especially at the Belmont!

These odds will change as the race draws closer (and already have today since the post positions were announced)

1 – Big Brown – 1/3
2 – Guadalcanal – 40/1
3 – Macho Again – 33/1
4 – Denis Of Cork – 10/1
5 – Casino Drive – 7/2
6 – Da’ Tara – 33/1
7 – Tale Of Ekati – 16/1
8 – Anak Nakal – 40/1
9 – Ready’s Echo – 40/1
10 – Icabad Crane – 50/1

I’ve also seen quite a few nice props on big brown which could be used to hedge your win bets.
