College Basketball Pick (March 5): Wisconsin-Green Bay vs. Detroit

Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix vs. Detroit Titans (Horizon League Tournament Quarterfinals)

- Wisconsin-Green Bay is 2-0 vs. Detroit this season. Both wins are two-point wins, with the Phoenix winning 74-72 at home on Jan. 16 and 64-62 at Detroit on Feb. 11.

- The Phoenix have won six straight in this series. Detroit’s last win was a 76-72 win on Feb. 1, 2007.

- The Phoenix ended the season on a nice run, winning three of their last four and five of their last seven. They followed that up by beating Youngstown State by 14 in the first round of the Horizon League tournament on Tuesday night.

- The Phoenix were 10-4 in the regular season against the teams who finished below them in the Horizon League (they finished third behind Butler and Wright State with an 11-7 mark).

- That mark includes a 7-1 mark against teams who finished at .500 or worse in the regular season standings (Detroit finished right at .500 with a 9-9 mark).

- Even including their win at Valparaiso on Tuesday, the Titans are just 5-8 this season against teams who finished above them in the Horizon League standings.

- The Titans are hot in their own right though, having won four in a row after a run of seven losses in nine games ruined their chances for a +.500 league finish.

- Bradley has lost six in a row to Creighton since an 87-59 win at home on Feb. 16, 2008.

- Creighton has won 17 of the last 20 meetings overall against Bradley dating back to the 2002/03 season.

- Creighton has failed to advance out of the MVC tournament quarterfinals only twice in the last 11 seasons.

NBA Pick (Mar. 3): New Orleans vs. Memphis

New Orleans Hornets vs. Memphis Grizzlies

- New Orleans is 20-10 at home this season.

- The Hornets have lost nine of their last 14 overall, but after a spell in which they lost six of eight at home, they had won three in a row at home before Monday’s loss to San Antonio.

- The Hornets are 2-0 vs. Memphis this season, winning 113-111 at home on Jan. 20 and 109-102 in overtime in Memphis on Jan. 30.

- The Hornets have won 10 of the last 11 and 15 of the last 17 vs. the Grizzlies.

- The Hornets have won their last nine home games against the Grizzlies. Their last home loss to Memphis was on Mar. 16, 2005, when James Posey (now on the Hornets) led the playoff-bound Griz to an 88-82 win over the lottery-bound Hornets.

- Like the Hornets, the Grizzlies have also been in a funk over the last month, having lost nine of their last 13 games.

- However, all four of those wins in that span have come on the road, as they hold a four-game road win streak. For what it’s worth though, the only really solid win in that bunch came at Toronto (a 109-102 OT win on Feb. 17).

- Memphis is only 4-14 on the road against Western Conference opposition this season. On the flip side, they’re 8-3 on the road against Eastern Conference opposition this season.

- The Grizzlies are 2-8 in their last 10 overall games against Western Conference opposition.

- The Hornets have lost four of their last five home games against Western Conference opposition, but they’re still 12-6 at home against Western Conference opposition this season.

College Basketball Pick (Tues., Mar. 2): Valparaiso vs. Detroit

Valparaiso Crusaders vs. Detroit Titans (Horizon League Tournament Opening Round)

- Valparaiso is 9-3 at home this season.

- The Crusaders were 6-3 at home against conference opposition in the regular season.

- Their three losses were to Wisconsin-Green Bay (by six – 20-11, 11-7 Horizon – finished third), Wright State (by four – 19-11, 12-6 – finished second), and Butler (by five – 26-4, 18-0 – regular season champ and currently ranked #12 AP/#11 ESPN).

- The Crusaders went 7-1 against the four teams below them in the Horizon League (Detroit, Loyola, Illinois-Chicago, Youngstown State). The only loss was a 77-67 loss at Detroit on Jan. 8. In that game, Valpo had a 10-point halftime lead, but Detroit outscored them 53-33 in the second half.

- After that game, Detroit was 11-5 and 4-1 in the Horizon, and Valpo was 6-10, 1-3 in the Horizon. From that point, the Titans lost eight of their next 12 before ending the regular season with a three-game win streak, and after losing their next game, the Crusaders won nine of their 12 before ending the regular season with consecutive losses (at Bowling Green and vs. Butler).

- Valpo beat Detroit 74-70 at home on Feb. 6. Valpo led that game by 19 at halftime and weathered an amazing comeback by the Titans (outscored the Crusaders to 30-7 in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 54-50 lead) to win.

- Detroit is only 5-8 on the road this season.

- The Titans only went 2-4 on the road and 4-8 overall in the regular season against teams who finished above them in the conference standings.
