It is still the end of February, but March is right around the corner, which means March Madness is upon us. There are only a couple of games left in the regular season and then there are some conference tournaments. After that selection Sunday, where some teams will be happy and some will feel slighted not getting an invite to the Big Dance. There are quite a few teams that can punch their ticket to the Big Dance and let’s look at the teams that have the top 5 futures odds to win the NCAA tournament at one of the leading sportsbooks.
Kansas (+200)
Can anybody beat Kansas? Sure, the NCAA National Championship may be the hardest college championship to win, but Kansas is simply stacked and they have several players on their roster that may be future NBA stars. The Jayhawks are solid inside and out with guards Sherron Collins and Xavier Henry, forward Marcus Morris, and center Cole Aldrich. All of these guys are averaging in double figures and all look to be 1st round NBA draft picks. Kansas not only has an offense that is averaging 82.6 ppg, but their D is solid as well only allowing an average of 63 ppg. Kansas only has one loss so far this season and that was way back on January 10th. Nobody wants to play the Jayhawks and with good reason.
Kentucky (+300)
Kentucky also only has one loss and they are one of the most athletic and exciting teams this season. The Wildcats are averaging over 80 points per game and are only allowing around 65. They are led by Player of the Year candidate G John Wall (16.7 ppg), who may be the #1 pick in the next NBA draft. The Wildcats have a solid frontcourt with the F duo of DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson, who can both fill it up. Sure, the Wildcats are young, but there is a reason they have the 2nd best odds to win it all.
Syracuse (+400)
Syracuse is in 1st place in the Big East, which is probably the toughest conference in the nation with 5 teams that are ranked in the top 25. The Orange have one of the best frontcourts in the nation with 4 forwards averaging in double figures. The Orange are only allowing an average of 65.3 ppg, but do they have enough guard play to go all the way?
Villanova (+1000)
Nova has one of the best backcourts in the nation and because they lost a couple of games recently they may have to win the Big East tournament to get a #1 seed in the Big Dance. G Scottie Reynolds (19 ppg) can shoot lights out, but the Wildcats may be in trouble if they face a team with a great frontcourt, as they are thin inside.
Purdue (+1200)
Purdue still has the 5th best odds to win the NCAA tournament, but that may change considering they recently lost 2nd leading scorer F Robbie Hummel (15.7 ppg 6.9 rpg) for the season with a knee injury. The Boilermakers are leading the Big 10 and are currently ranked #3 in the nation, but the loss of Hummel will really hurt, as Purdue does not have another forward that is averaging over 2 points or 2 rebounds per game.
Other teams that will go dancing and have decent odds to win it all are Ohio State (+1500), Duke (+1500), West Virginia (+1800), Kansas State (+2000), and Texas (+2000).

Generally all the experts beak down the winners and losers after the trade deadline, but this season it is really hard to find a loser. Sure, teams got better and some got worse, but the ones that did are looking towards the future in freeing up cap space or getting younger players.
Here is a look at some of the deals that were made and the odds after each team denotes their odds to win the NBA title.
The Mavericks (+1500) and the Wizards (+10000) were the first team to pull a big deal. Dallas acquired Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, DeShawn Stevenson, and cash from Washington and that may help them get deep in the playoffs, but past the Lakers or Nuggets? Probably not. The Wizards were depleted not only by this trade but the one sending Antawn Jamison to Cleveland, but they will clear a ton of cap space and Al Thornton, who they got from the Clippers, is a player to build around.
The Cavaliers (+150) got Jamison and they did not have to give up promising F J.J. Hickson. The Cavs got another scorer to team up with King James and they may even get Zydrunas Ilgauskas back if he is waived, which is expected.
The Celtics (+800) improved their bench by adding Nate Robinson from the Knicks, who made more cap room with the deal.
The Knicks (+10000) got rid of Robinson and landed Tracy McGrady, and his monster contract that comes off the books next season. Good call New York, as they get to try out McGrady and they have a ton of money to throw at all the free agents next summer, especially LeBron James. The Knicks also added a couple of promising young guys in J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker.
The Blazers (+6000) picked up Marcus Camby to help replace their 2 starting centers and the Bucks (+10000) traded for SG John Salmons to fill in for Michael Redd, who is out with another knee injury. With this deal and a couple others not really of note the Bucks now have 3 2nd round draft picks, which will help them in the future.
The Bobcats (+10000) improved their bench by getting Ronnie Brewer and they got better defensively by brining in Theo Ratliff. These moves will not only help the Bobcats make a playoff push this season, but also it will help them in the future.
The Bulls (+7500) picked up a couple of young guys with talent in Hakim Warrick and Joe Alexander, but replacing the scoring of John Salmons will hurt, especially since the Bulls are so weak on offense. However, Chicago did clear a ton of cap space to try to sign a big name free agent.
The Rockets finally got rid of McGrady and they got scorer Kevin Martin from Sacramento. The Rockets (+1000) had to give up 6th man Carl Landry to the Kings (+10000) to get Martin, so it remains to be seen how this deal will play out.
The Knicks may have been the biggest winners and it will not show this season, but next season depending whom they can land in the free agent market and if Tracy McGrady can find some of his old magic.
