MLB Pick (July 28): Colorado Rockies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Colorado Rockies (51-49, 31-17 home) vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (35-64, 12-38 road)
Pitching Matchup: Aaron Cook (4-6, 4.78 ERA) vs. Ross Ohlendorf (1-8, 4.39 ERA)
- Ohlendorf is 0-4 with a 4.29 ERA in six road starts.
- The Pirates are 0-6 in Ohlendorf’s road starts, and four of the six losses have been by multiple runs.
- Only twice this season has Pittsburgh been able to win two or more road games in a row. They won three straight on the road from April 27-29, and they beat the Cubs back-to-back on May 14 and 15. Since then, they’re 0-5 when they’ve had a chance to notch back-to-back road wins.
- Last night’s 4-2 win over the Rockies snapped a six-game road losing streak for the Pirates, and it was also only their fourth road win in their last 31 road games.
- Cook is 3-0 with a 3.25 ERA in eight home starts this season.
- The Rockies are 6-2 in Cook’s eight home starts.
- Seven of Cook’s 10 quality starts this season have been at home. The only one of his home starts that wasn’t a home start came July 7 against St. Louis, when he allowed five runs and 10 hits in five innings. But thanks to Dexter Fowler’s game-tying three-run homer in the 8th and Chris Iannetta’s walk-off solo shot in the ninth, the Rockies won 8-7 and Cook wound up with a no-decision instead of a loss.
The Rockies have lost seven in a row. At some point, logic would dictate that they snap out of it, and snap out of it in a big way. Tonight’s the perfect night to do so. Cook’s pitched very well at home outside of the outing against the Cardinals, and the Pirates…well, they’re still the Pirates, even after last night’s win.
