Daytona Shootout Preview
Well, another NASCAR season is about to begin with the first event of the season in the Budweiser Daytona Shootout from Daytona International Speedway.
It is interesting that Jimmy Johnson will be going for his 5th straight Sprint Cup Championship title, but he does not even have the best odds to win this unique race. Why unique? OK, well first of all it is a select event of drivers and the format is different. The Daytona Shootout is an exhibition race that includes drivers that were in the Chase for the Champions last season as well as winners of the races of the Coke Zero 500, Daytona 500, and the Budweiser Shootout. Also in the field for this event are the Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year and the pole winners from races last season.
The format of the Daytona Shootout is unique, as it is a 2-segment race, where in the 1st segment drivers will race for 25 laps, will then take a 10-minute intermission break, and then race to the finish line after 50 more laps.
Here are some of the drivers that have the best odds to win the Daytona Shootout. The odds come from one of the leading sportsbooks on the Net today.
Both Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart have the best odds, as each is at 7/1. Stewart has won this race 3 times in his career and is always a threat to take the checkered flag. Busch has never won this event, but he did win the big daddy in the Daytona 500 in 2008. He has raced in 5 of these shootouts and in 4 of those races he did finish in the top 5. Maybe this is the year he finally wins.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. is at 8/1 and he has won this event twice the first in 2003 and then again in 2008. He has also won 2 other events on this track and in 20 career races at Daytona he has been solid finishing in the top 10 an impressive 11 times.
Jeff Gordon had a bit of a resurgence last season and he looks to start this season off strong. He has odds of 8/1 and he has won this event twice, but it has been a while, as the first win came in 1994 and then again in 1997. In his career Gordon has raced in 34 events on the Daytona track and he has placed well winning 6 times and has finished in the top 10 half of the time (17).
The reigning Sprint Cup champion Jimmy Johnson is at 8/1 to win this year’s Daytona Shootout. He won the shootout in 2005 and in 16 races at the Daytona International Speedway he has finished in the top 10 9 times.
