College Basketball Preview & Pick (Feb. 8): New Mexico State vs. Louisiana Tech
New Mexico State Aggies vs. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
We’ve got a big showdown tonight in the WAC, where New Mexico State will be looking to pull off the season sweep against Louisiana Tech and climb into a tie for first place in the conference.
Up until recently, Louisiana Tech was looking like the favorite to win the WAC, as they had sprinted out to a 17-2 start and won their first five conference games. However, they’ve dropped two of their last four, falling at San Jose State on Jan. 21 and at home to New Mexico State on Jan. 30.
On the other hand, New Mexico State is on fire, as shown by their 14-point win in Ruston a little over a week ago. Since a 3-6 start, the Aggies are 11-2, with their lone losses coming at home to Nevada and at spoiler-ific San Jose State.
The winner of tonight’s game will move into a tie for first place with streaking Utah State (18-6, 8-2), who has won their last eight conference games since starting WAC play with back-to-back road losses to New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech.
I’m looking for that team to be the home team. They went into Ruston as double-digit underdogs and walked out with a 91-77 win in a game in which they never trailed and led by double digits for the majority of the second half.
Louisiana Tech hasn’t won in Las Cruces since the Aggies joined the WAC for the 2005/06 season. New Mexico State has won all four regular season meetings, and they also beat the Bulldogs in the WAC tournament quarterfinals in March 2007, when they swept through the tournament to land the automatic bid.
There’s a good chance this matchup is a lot closer than the recent one in Ruston, but it’s going to have the same outcome. The Aggies are on a roll, and it’s not going to stop tonight.
