Free NHL Picks – Thursday, November 5
It’s a Thursday night spectacular in the NHL, as there are 10 games on tap for tonight.
And guess what?
I’ve got picks involving all 10 games. Crazy? Probably, but if you happen to hit on a 10-team parlay with these picks, let me know, and if you’d like, give me a cut.
Perhaps it’s all a little much, but there are a lot of goodies in today’s NHL odds, including a couple of road underdogs that I think have the goods to get it done away from the friendly confines tonight.
NHL PICKS RECORD
Yesterday (Wednesday, Nov. 4): 2-2
Season-to-date: 8-4
TODAY’S NHL PICKS
BOSTON -155 vs. Montreal
MINNESOTA -115 vs. Vancouver
OTTAWA -150 vs. Tampa Bay
DETROIT -135 vs. San Jose
CALGARY EVEN at St. Louis
Phoenix/Chicago UNDER 5 ½
EDMONTON EVEN vs. New York Rangers
Atlanta/Columbus OVER 6
NASHVILLE EVEN at Anaheim
Los Angeles/Pittsburgh OVER 6
Boston Bruins (6-7-1) vs. Montreal Canadiens (7-8-0)
Why I‘m picking the Bruins: Going by the pattern Boston’s set, the Canadiens are going to win tonight. Boston has alternated wins and losses at home this season, and their last home game was a win (2-0 over Edmonton on Sat.).
However, their four home losses have come against teams who have a combined road record of 19-6-5. Montreal’s road record? 2-5-0. I’m going with the Bruins.
Minnesota Wild (5-9-0) vs. Vancouver Canucks (9-7-0)
Why I’m picking the Wild: The Wild have shown signs of putting their early-season funk behind them, winning back-to-back games against the Rangers and Penguins, and they’re 4-1-0 at home thus far this season. On the other hand, the Canucks are 2-5-0 on the road and have suffered some heavy defeats away from home, including a 7-2 loss at Anaheim last Friday in their most recent road game.
Ottawa Senators (6-4-2) vs. Tampa Bay Lightning (5-4-4)
Why I’m picking the Senators: Ottawa beat Tampa Bay 7-1 when they met in Ottawa on Oct. 15, and the Senators have won 12 of 16 home meetings vs. the Lightning dating back to the 2002/03 season.
Detroit Red Wings (6-4-3) vs. San Jose Sharks (11-4-1)
Why I’m picking the Red Wings: San Jose is 6-1-0 in their last seven road games, but Detroit is 12-3-0 in their last 15 home meetings (regular season and postseason) vs. San Jose dating back to the 2002/03 season.
St. Louis Blues (5-6-1) vs. Calgary Flames (8-4-1)
Why I’m picking the Flames: Calgary is 3-1-1 on the road, and St. Louis is 2-5-0 at home. Also, for what it’s worth, the Flames are a sparkling 8-1-1 in their last 10 road games against the Blues.
Phoenix Coyotes (9-6-0) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (8-4-1)
Why I‘m picking the under 5 ½: The Coyotes are second in the NHL in goals against average at 2.27, and the Blackhawks are third at 2.31.
The total has been under 5 ½ in the Blackhawks’ five games overall and in all four of their road games. The total has been under 5 ½ in four of Phoenix’s last five, in 11 of their 15 games this season, and in every home game except for their two meetings against Los Angeles.
Edmonton Oilers (7-7-1) vs. New York Rangers (9-6-1)
Why I‘m picking the Oilers: Both teams come in cold, as the Oilers are 1-5-1 in their last seven, and the Rangers are 2-5-1 in their last eight.
But, the Oilers are 6-2-1 at home, while the Rangers are 0-3-1 in their last four road games.
Atlanta Thrashers (6-4-1) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (7-5-2)
Why I‘m picking the over 6: The total has been over six in all four of Atlanta’s home games and in seven of Columbus’ eight road games. Atlanta has scored at least three goals and given up at least three in each home game.
Columbus has scored three or more in six road games and given up three or more in seven of their eight road games, four or more in six, and six goals four times on the road. The Blue Jackets have also given up three goals in eight straight games overall.
Anaheim Ducks (4-7-2) vs. Nashville Predators (6-6-1)
Why I’m picking the Predators: The Ducks are only 2-5-0 at home this season, and they’ve just been a major disappointment all around. The Predators are on a nice roll, having won three in a row and four of their last five.
Los Angeles Kings (9-4-2) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (12-3-0)
Why I’m picking the over 6: With two of the league’s top scoring teams on the ice in this one, I’m expecting plenty of action and plenty of goals.
The total has been over six in five of the Kings’ six home games, and it’s been over six in five of the Penguins’ seven road games. Sounds like a recipe for a goalfest to me, which is why I’m taking the over.
