The best time of the year to be a gambler is right now, in my opinion.  MLB playoffs are here, football is back, and NHL Hockey is back.  Books are offering the best bonuses I have seen in a long time and the action is fierce for the gamblers dollar. I am going take a look at hockey in this blog as it offers some great opportunities for wagering and is a blast to watch.

The NHL season started back and I couldn’t be happier. The Penguins, with their young talent and most of last season’s Stanley Cup-winning team back, have the look of an emerging dynasty. No team has repeated as champion since the Red Wings in 1997 and ‘98.

So who do I like, will the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins meet in the Stanley Cup finals for a third straight final, or will the San Jose Sharks find the heart to match their talent? I am leaning towards the Pens but it is hard to go against a great Sharks team.

This promises to be a great year and an eventful one in Hockey as there will be two champions crowned this season: The league will shut down for two weeks in February for the Winter Olympics, where Canada will have the home-ice advantage in Vancouver and be favored.

So what to watch for in the NHL this year.

Of course, Sid vs. Alex! While Washington’s Alex Ovechkin may have back-to-back MVP awards, Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby will try to take their personal rivalry to a new level this season with a repeat championship.

The Capitals likely pose the biggest threat in the Eastern Conference to Pittsburgh. With a lineup that boasts Ovechkin, the NHL leader in goals the past two seasons, fellow forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin, and high-scoring defenseman Mike Green, Washington has a great chance this year, in my opinion at least.

Other contenders

The Boston Bruins figure to have something to say about who comes out of the East as they try to build off a season in which they surprisingly vaulted from the No. 8 playoff seed in 2008 to No. 1 in 2009. They were eliminated in the second round by Carolina.

Detroit is still the team to beat out West for alot of people but I am taking a futures bet on  San Jose.
