THE WEEK IN SPORTS
It promises to be a wild week in sports as football is in high gear, baseball is entering the last week of regular season and we even have some champions league soccer on tap. We have alot to look at this week so lets get to it.
Lets start off this weeks look at sports with a look at the baseball playoff situation. As the 2009 enters its final week of regular season games, two more teams have joined the New York Yankees in securing playoff berths.
The National League’s St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers have both cemented post-season appearances, with the Cardinals also clinching the National League Central Division title.
If the current standings hold true, the Dodgers are poised to wrap up the NL West title over the scrappy Colorado Rockies within the next couple of days. The Rockies, however, have a bit of a fight on their hands for the NL Wildcard with the surprising Atlanta Braves breathing down their necks.
On the American League side, the New York Yankees clinched the AL East title yesterday, September 27, following the team’s three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox, but the Sox remain poised to walk off with the Wildcard this week because they have a commanding lead over the Texas Rangers. With their 100-win record, which is the best in baseball, the Yankees will have the home field advantage throughout the post-season.
The Detroit Tigers remain in a race for the AL Central title with the Minnesota Twins, and the two teams play a four-game set beginning today, which will likely decide the division.
The playoffs are scheduled to begin Wednesday, October 7.
Looking ahead to week 4 in NFL action, one of the best games in the week 4 NFL schedule has to be the Baltimore vs. New England match-up that takes place on CBS this Sunday. It pits a great defense against a great offense, and will be a game where both teams can prove they belong among the NFL’s elite. Many other NFL fans will turn to the New York Jets against the New Orleans Saints as the best match-up of two undefeated teams at this point in the season. Both teams are 3-0, and many fans are rushing to claim that these are the two best teams in the NFL right now. One of them is going to end up with a loss though and my belief it will be the Jets.
Another game on Sunday that could be quite interesting is San Diego against Pittsburgh. The Chargers are trying to prove they belong at 2-1, while the Steelers are trying to prove that they are better than their 1-2 record. It’s going to be hard fought, but I think the Steelers should pull this one out in the end. If you are looking for the game that will pad the fantasy stats the most, take a look at the New York Giants heading to Kansas City. On paper this is the most lop-sided match-up so far this season in the NFL, and the Chiefs are heavily over-matched. That’s why they play the games though. Monday night’s game is no slouch either, as Green Bay head to Minnesota. Minnesota will be tested, but look for the revenge of Brett Favre to take place.
Some of my Week 4 NFL Picks:
Baltimore over New England Sunday
Odds supplied by Betus
205 Baltimore Ravens +2 -110
206 New England Patriots -2 -110
One interesting game in College football in Week 5 is Michigan against Michigan State everything that could go wrong went wrong for the Wolverines last week. The back-up center should get some more snaps and be better, my only concern is Forcier, an unhealthy Forcier makes this game have a lot of risk. If Forcier is healthy I love Michigan.
College Football Week 5 actually kicks off on Wednesday at 8:00 PM ET as Hawaii is at Louisiana Tech at Joe Aillet Stadium. The Hawaii Rainbows come in at 2-1 after a loss to UNLV 34-33 and the Bulldogs are 1-2 after losing on the road to Auburn and Navy, and got a home win against Nicholls State.
Odds supplied by Betus
101 Hawaii Warriors +3½ -110
102 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs -3½ -110
It promises to be a great week so stay tuned to our site for picks and updates.
