THE WEEK IN SPORTS
We are coming off a rather wild weekend as football is kicking into high gear and seems to be capturing most of the attention of ESPN and the sports world. There are plenty of other thing going on this week though and I am going to list the TV listings and various media events for this weeks major events and then we will obviously take a look at football as it promises to be an exciting week all over the sports world.
I am going to try something new this week and list most of the major events on TV this week and other events like DVD releases and movie releases that deal with sports. I may make this a weekly event on THE WEEK IN SPORTS so check us out each week for all the happenings on TV and in the media across the sporting world.
TV Listings and media events for this week major sporting events
Monday
The Dolphins are back on Monday Night Football. This is an exciting event for MNF and Miami as no other franchise has made more appearances (73) on “Monday Night Football” than the Miami Dolphins. After going all last season without a date, they will play two this year, the first at Land Shark Stadium against the Colts.
TV: ESPN.

Tuesday
I read about this dvd coming out and I thought I would add this as it seems to be fitting for Cubs fans this year. “We Believe”is a dvd about the Cubs. The 2009 documentary deals with the relationship between the Cubs, Chicago and their fans and is a must-own for any baseball fan.
The DVD hits the streets Tuesday.
I have actually enjoyed this show and heard about it from listening to Artie Lange. HBO’s “Joe Buck Live.” is a great show and worth checking out for sports fans. This will be the second episode, and this one will feature a panel of some of the NFL’s all-time greatest quarterbacks, including Dan Marino, John Elway and Joe Namath.
TV: HBO.
Wednesday
San Francisco seems to be losing out as the season ends. Postseason seems unlikely for the Giants, who are fighting to keep up with the Rockies in the NL wild-card race. They end a three-game series with the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
TV: ESPN.
Thursday
Another great Thursday night college football showdown. This week No. 4 Mississippi looks to show the country it’s ranking is deserved when the Rebels travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina. The Gamecocks are 2-1 overall but 0-1 in the SEC, while Ole Miss is looking to snap a five-game losing streak in SEC openers.
TV: ESPN.
Friday
Don’t let the standings fool you. Despite the fact the Yankees have run away with the American League East, the rivalry between them and the Red Sox is still worth checking out. Meeting for the final time this regular season, Boston travels to New York for a three-game series.
TV: TBS.
Saturday
I was a little disappointed with the Mayweather fight but this one promises to be a good one, Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs) will step into the ring at the Staples Center to defend his WBC heavyweight title against 28-year-old Cristobal Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs). If Arreola can pull off the upset against Klitschko (above), he will become the first boxer of Mexican descent to capture a heavyweight title.
TV: HBO.
The game with with Oregon should provide Jahvid Best’s a great national showing for his run at the Heisman Trophy . The Cal running back will get his first true challenge when the Bears kick off Pac-10 play in Eugene. Last year the junior had 16 carries for 93 yards to lead Cal to a 26-16 victory over the Ducks. This one should be a great one.
TV: ABC.
Sunday
Have you been watching any Nascar lately? If you have you should know that if Greg Biffle has any chance of making up ground in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, the AAA 400 would be the place to do it.
TV: ABC.
I have actually been watching F1 racing alot lately and this year has no shortage of F1 drama. Rubens Barrichello has come from nowhere to catch Jenson Button in the race for the Formula One title. After winning six of the first seven races, Button has struggled, while Barrichello has won two of the last three races and moved within 14 points of the lead, making the Singapore Grand Prix an important race.
TV: Speed Channel.
Michael Vick returns next weekend. After serving his two-game suspension from the NFL, Michael Vick is eligible to make his regular-season debut with the Eagles when Philadelphia hosts the Chiefs.
TV: Check local listings.
First the Colts fly 1,200 miles to Miami to take on the Dolphins, then they fly another 2,000 miles to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in a Sunday night matchup.
TV: NBC.
I always remembered the Miami Dolphins on Monday night football growing up and Monday Night Football will be continuing its 40th anniversary celebration tonight with the Dolphins on national television.
Though the NFL now gives NBC’s Sunday night game the best match ups it once gave to Monday Night Football, the league doesn’t usually disappoint when it comes to Monday night though we saw some bad ones last year. Monday night has not seen the dolphins since Christmas night, 2006. The Dolphins actually disappointed in that one with a home loss to the Jets, a game scheduled after the Dolphins’ surprising 9-7 2005 season.
Similarly, this return to prime time is not surprising as the NFL acknowledges the Dolphins’ 11-5 2008 season made them a candidate for Monday night again.
