Implied odds
Implied odds in poker are defined in situations when you don’t have the proper odds to call a bet, but the potential money that you could make if you hit your hand offset those bad odds.
Here is a hand that I played about a month ago which are an example of implied odds, or so I thought….
Poker Stars $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold’em – 9 players
The Official 2+2 Hand Converter Powered By DeucesCracked.com
BTN: $51.85
SB: $50.25
BB: $100.60
UTG: $55.30
UTG+1: $53.50
UTG+2: $50.25
Hero (MP1): $51.75
MP2: $56.25
CO: $69.00
Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is MP1 with 6s 5s
UTG raises to $1.50, 2 folds, Hero calls $1.50, MP2 calls $1.50, 4 folds
(I love getting in cheaply with hands like this that can sometimes flop big.)
Flop: ($5.25) 9s 4c 2c (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero checks, MP2 checks
(I flop a gutshot straight draw but won’t call a bet here. I’m glad when it checks around and I get to see a free turn card.)
Turn: ($5.25) Ts (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $4, MP2 raises to $14, UTG folds, Hero calls $10
(I turn a flush draw in addition to my gutshot straight draw. I decide to bet here with my draws and hope to take the pot down right now. I’m surprised when I’m check-raised. Based on prior play at this level, I’m putting my opponent on a hand like A10, K10 or maybe a set. I don’t really have the odds to call and hit my draw, but I think that I may get paid off if I do hit, so I decide to come along.)
River: ($33.25) 3c (2 players)
Hero checks, MP2 bets $24, Hero raises to $36.25 all in, MP2 folds
(Bingo! I hit my gutshot but it also bring a third club on the board. I’m not really worried about the flush though. I decide to just check and hope that my opponent will fire at the pot. He does, I then check-raise him all-in and he snap folds.)
Final Pot: $81.25
Hero wins $78.25
(Rake: $3.00)
My opponent obviously had nothing because he had put in $39.50 and only had $16.75 behind. He would have had to make a crying call with any part of the board. I thought he had a much stronger hand on the turn and that is why I called his turn check-raise, figuring that I would make more money if I hit my hand on the river.
I was wrong about the strength of his hand, but I did end up making some good money on the river because I decided to check and let him either value bet or bluff at the pot one more time.
