Drinking and poker
I’m sitting here right now, a little tipsy after going out for a few drinks, playing a 2/4 no limit game because I’m an idiot who just couldn’t go to bed but decided that I’ve got to play some poker. I’ve told myself that “I’ll just double up once and then sit out and go to bed. Just one double up is all I need.” We all know how that goes.
So when the 55 percent maniac raises to $20 preflop and I have 66 in the cutoff, what do I do? I smooth call and intend to raise the flop on a bluff unless it’s a very scary flop.
The flop comes 9 high, with a 6 on it! I’ve flopped a set. I called my opponents $40 flop bet.
Then on the turn, an apparent rag card comes, the maniac bets, I raise, and he goes all in. I call his turned straight, which he made with 87o.
I start yelling, “Pair the board! Pair the board!
Then the river brings that perfect card: the 7 of hearts to pair the board, giving me a boat which crushes his straight for a $425 profit. Yeah baby!
I want to remember this, what it’s like to be making good money when I’m playing well and getting lucky when I happen to be behind. This doesn’t seem to happen much for me. When the money goes in and I’m behind in a hand, I never seem to catch up. Not tonight though.
I’ve been on a really good run lately. Here is what I’m doing differently….
_I’m trying to take more notes on my opponents. I’m trying to put a note on at least one of my opponents every hand if possible.
_I’m keeping track of all the the action from start to finish. I’m trying not to let my mind wander and think about other things while a hand is going on.
_I’m being patient. This is sometimes a major problem for me.
_I’m only playing two or three tables at a time. This really helps my focus.
I know this good run won’t last forever, but I’m going to enjoy it while it does.
