Do you really think you have the best hand here?
I was going over some of my old hand histories tonight on PokerTracker to review my play. This can be a really effective tool in improving your overall game. Seeing your mistakes after the fact can be an invaluable resource.
Now the hand below is not where I made any mistakes. It’s one where I was up against a pretty poor opponent and I am going to go over his mistakes in the hand.
Poker Stars $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold’em – 7 players
MP: $26.45
Hero (CO): $70.25
BTN: $71.45
SB: $50.00
BB: $45.15
UTG: $47.50
UTG+1: $44.00
Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is CO with 7 7
3 folds, Hero raises to $1.75, 2 folds, BB calls $1.25
(I make a standard opening raise in the cutoff with pocket sevens. My opponent calls my raise from the BB with 9h3h. First off, this is a serious leak in the guy’s game. Calling preflop raises with weak hands like this is just burning money.)
Flop: ($3.75) 3 8 5 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $2.85, BB calls $2.85
(The flop is a good one for me. The BB checks and I fire out what I believe is a value bet with the best hand. I don’t have a problem with my opponent calling me here with bottom pair. It’s possible that I just have two overcards and am firing a continuation bet.)
Turn: ($9.45) 8 (2 players)
BB bets $15, Hero raises to $44, BB calls $25.55 all in
(What is my opponent doing here? He is firing out a big overbet of the pot. The only way that I am going to call him is if I have him beat, which I do. My opponent is basically telling me that he doesn’t have an 8 in his hand because no player would ever make that big of a bet with three 8’s in this situation. I now know that I have the best hand and just shove all-in. My opponent for some unknown reason decides to call when there is zero chance that he has the best hand here.)
River: ($90.55) J (2 players – 1 is all in)
Final Pot: $90.55
Hero shows 7 7 (two pair, Eights and Sevens)
BB shows 9 3 (two pair, Eights and Threes)
Hero wins $87.55
(Rake: $3.00)
The first mistake that my opponent made was calling my preflop raise with a junk hand. This just led to a series of mistakes that he never should have made. Now he played pretty poorly regardless of that initial mistake but he never should have been in the hand in the first place.
