Saturday night home game
I played a local home game at a buddy’s house last Saturday night. We’ve played this game for about the last six years, about once every six or seven weeks.
The players are pretty bad and the stakes are really low, so the beats can be pretty brutal. I believe that I’ve only walked away a loser maybe two or three times in the past six years. The key to winning in this game is to know when you have very little chance of winning a hand and just to fold your hand early. There are plenty of chasers in this game and that is why the bad beats are plentiful.
The stakes we play are one dollar bets and raises until the last two cards, when the bets and raises can be made in 2 dollar increments. Some of the games we play are….
Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo
Omaha Hi/Lo
Five Card Stud Hi/Lo
Thirty-three Hi/Lo(three cards in your hand and three on the board, you can use all the cards to make your best five card hand)
Forty-four Hi/Lo(four cards in your hand and four on the board, you can use all the cards to make your best five card hand)
and a variety of wild card games….
Follow the Queen Hi/Lo
Bingo Hi/Lo(Five cards in your hand and three rows of three on the board. You turn the four corners up first and then go card by card until you’ve turned the whole board up with betting on each card that’s turned up.)
The Good and The Bad Hi/Lo(Five cards in your hand and two rows of five on the board. On the top row, each card is good. On the bottom row, each card is bad. For example, if you hold 2 queens in your hand and a queen hits the “bad row”, the two queens in your hand are now dead and no good. This game can be brutal because you can have a made hand all the way until the end and then your hand can die.)
We started playing about 5pm this night and most people ended up leaving around 1am. That left about three of us and we switched to NLHE for the last two hours. I ended up leaving up about $135, which is a pretty significant win for the stakes that we play.
It’s a really fun game and one of my favorite home games that I play in.
