Playing for fun
I decided to take a break from serious poker to play at a local home game. The host for the evening only plays $5 buy-in tournaments so the money doesn’t really mean anything. It’s just a fun night of drinking, good music and good conversation. It was a really good time and reminded me of why I started playing poker in the first place, before making money became the prime issue.
I started the night by asking the other people why would anyone ever fold before they got to see the flop. I mean just seeing 2 out of 7 cards is hardly enough information to know if you’re going to win the hand or not. Suited cards are great to pick up too right? I mean you’ll hit a flush at least 1 in 3 times right? If I get an ace, I should always raise right?
We even fixed the deck so that one person would have AA and the other KK. They both ended up all-in preflop with AA hitting a set on the flop to take a dominant lead in the hand. The only way KK could win was to hit the two remaining kings on the turn and river. That’s less than a 1 percent chance of happening. Of course it did. That setup was definitely good for a laugh or two.
Not long after that hand we got down to 3-handed and my buddy goes all-in. He is holding about 35% of the chips, while I’m holding about 45%. I give him a strange look and then look down to find pocket kings. I immediately think that the hand is rigged against me and say so, but I go all-in regardless. The short-stack called as well. It turns out that the hand wasn’t a setup and I ended up winning.
People going all-in ahead of me was a good thing that night. On another hand, somebody looked me dead in the eye with a very serious look for about 5 seconds and then announced that he was all-in when I had flopped top set giving me the current nuts at the time. Imagine someone trying to intimidate you out of a hand where you flopped the nuts. Not gonna happen buddy.
Overall, this was the most fun that I’ve had playing poker in quite a while. I don’t play in this guy’s game often because there is really no money to be made there. It is a great time though.
