Some home game tourneys
We played 3 tournaments at a friend’s house last night. Two were $10 buyins and then we bumped it up to $20 for the last one. Nine people showed up so I guess you could call them one table SNG’s.
I was the chip leader for the majority of the first tournament, but with some bad decisions late and one really bad beat, I ended up finishing in third place, one spot out of the money. The big hand for that tournament was with 3 players left, the dealer went all-in, the SB went all-in over the top of him and I looked down to see KK. I snap called and when the hands were turned up, I was against AK and QQ. Wow, it’s rare that you find three big hands with only three players left. So, I went into the flop really only fearing an ace. I should have feared the queen also as one came on the flop to give my opponent a set. Oh, the ace also hit . I failed to hit my set on the turn and river and I was out.
I was a short stack for most of the second tournament. I was starting to build my stack back up when a player raised my BB and I see K9s. I felt like gambling in this spot, including hoping to take the pot away from my opponent if the flop looked promising. The flop was K55. I decided that I was going to the rail with that one if I had to. I checked to my opponent and he checked behind. The next card was a blank and I went all-in (a little less than a pot-sized bet). He called with pocket tens and was drawing to two outs. Of course, the third ten came on the river and I was eliminated from the second tournament.
I won the last tournament. There weren’t any real exciting hands except one where I was holding pocket nines and I flopped quads. I didn’t really gain any chips with that hand since the other person was on a busted flush draw. I did slowplay pocket queens heads-up and ended up hitting a set on the flop, but he wouldn’t even call a min-bet on the turn, so I didn’t gain any chips there either. Overall, this was a pretty uneventful win. I guess the ones you lose stick out more in your memory.
I ended up winning $40 for the night, but that’s not really a big deal. These small buyin home games are more for hanging out and talking smack with your friends just as much as they are for the poker.
