I’m a pretty tight player
I try to vary my play so that I’m not completely predictable and I think that it works for the most part. I’ll play some weaker hands from time to time and try and show them down just to prove a point to my opponents. Brian Townsend said in one of his earlier CardRunners videos that if you do something crazy at the table, people will remember it for a considerable amount of time and that it can help you make money during that time frame.
I wish that I could loosen up some preflop, but I have a really hard time doing it. Even when I feel like I’ve been playing looser in the 6 max NL games, it turns out not to be the case. When I go back and look at my PokerTracker stats, I find that I’m still only seeing about 20 percent or less of the flops.
I don’t think that tight play is terribly wrong, even in shorthanded games, because that kind of play increases the chances that you will have the better hand when you do decide to play one. In addition, I find that playing tight helps me get through a bad run of cards having minimal losses.
On the other hand, I recently went through my PT stats to try to figure out how I had a losing session after I had gone to bed the previous night thinking I was a winner. The reason turned out to be that the blinds really ate up my stack during the session. I had played really tight that night and losing the blinds over and over without stealing my fair share had been my nemesis.
It’s seeming more and more that the LAG(loose aggressive) players are the big winners in online poker these days. I am going to need to find a way to play that style more often if I hope to jump to the next level. It’s going to be tough but I’ve got to find a way to do it.
