Doubling up with quads

I played an interesting hand the other night at 400NL where my opponent stacked off to me with a marginal hand. I had no knowledge of him or his style of play so I can’t say that I was shocked. Let’s just say that I wouldn’t have done the same thing in that spot.

I was dealt AA UTG+1 in a 6 max game. I had only been at the table for about ten hands or so but it seemed like there were some really aggressive players here. I decided to open limp and see if I would get raised and then I could decide what to do from there. Anyway, the player in middle position obliged and raised to $20 and everyone else folded back to me. I had two options here. I could 3-bet here, which typically shows extreme strength. If my opponent is a thinking player, he would probably fold everything except extremely strong hands like AA, KK, QQ or AK. I decided instead to just call to disguise the strength of my hand. At this point, my opponent probably put me on a small to middle pair.

The flop was big for me, 10s Ah 7h. I flopped top set and the question was how was I going to get any money from my opponent. I checked and my opponent fired out a bet of $36. I decided to min-raise to $72 because the board was pretty draw heavy here with possible straight and flush draws. I didn’t want to blow my opponent off his hand though so that is why I decided to min-raise. He might have folded to a bigger raise.

The turn brought the best possible card for me, the As. Besides giving me the stone cold nuts, this card was good because it made it less likely in my opponent’s view that I held an ace. I checked again and my opponent fired a $100 bet at the pot and I min-raised again. I don’t know if this was the best play that I could have made because it screamed extreme strength. I was pleasantly surprised when I was min-raised back which put me all-in for my last $77.

The river brought the meaningless 7s. I turned up my quad Aces and my opponent turned up J10o for 2 pair, Aces and Tens, and I scooped the $741 pot.

I was pretty shocked when I saw my opponent’s hand. For him to lose his entire stack with that hand is pretty surprising. Now, I hadn’t played with him long enough to see what type of player he was so it’s possible that he was a complete fish or maybe he was on tilt because of something that had happened before I got to the table. I’m not sure but I can definitely say that I wouldn’t have done the same thing if the situation was reversed.

Not that I’m complaining or anything.
