Wimbledon Women’s Singles Quarterfinals Preview

Tomorrow, the Wimbledon women’s singles quarterfinals take place, and we’ve got a chance to have all four of the top seeds in the semifinals.

However, there are a couple of good upset candidates, and it won’t be a surprise to see one of the favorites get sent packing tomorrow.

You can see the latest Wimbledon women’s singles odds below. Normally, I’d give concrete predictions one way or another, but hey, I trust your judgment to make the right decisions…so don’t let me down!

#1 Dinara Safina (-250) v. Sabine Lisicki (+180)

Lisicki is on a fantastic run at Wimbledon, as the 19-year-old German has beaten top-10 players (Svetlana Kusnetsova in the third, Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth) in each of the last two rounds to make her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.

After having an easy time of it in the first three rounds, things were a lot tougher for the top seed and world #1 in the fourth round against Amelie Mauresmo. Safina dropped the first set, but she rallied to win the final two sets, and her hopes of making a third straight Grand Slam final this year are still alive.

How much longer will they be alive though? Lisicki may be inexperienced, but she’s shown in straight set victories over two top players that she has what it takes to beat the best, and I like her chances to pull off the upset.

#2 Serena Williams (-350) v. #8 Victoria Azarenka (+250)

Another round, another easy win for Serena, as she disposed of Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round. Serena looks to be in fine form right now, but she could be in line for a real challenge from Azarenka, who beat #10 seed Nadia Petrova in three sets to advance to the Wimbledon quarters for the first time.

Serena is right at home on the grass at Wimbledon, but Azarenka knows what it takes to beat her, and if she can play the same way she did in their previous matchups this year, she can pull off the upset, or at the very least, push Serena to three sets and tire her out a lot more than her previous opponents did. Azarenka beat Serena in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open earlier this season, and she won the first set when they met in the fourth round of the Australian Open before being forced to retire in the second set.

#3 Venus Williams (-800) v. #11 Agnieska Radwanska (+475)

Just like with Serena, it’s been easy breezy for Venus thus far. She didn’t even have to break all that much of a sweat in the fourth round against former #1 Ana Ivanovic, as she took the first set 6-1 and got to hit the showers early when Ivanovic retired early in the second set due to injury (or maybe she knew how things were going to turn out already).

Radwanska is making her second straight appearance in the Wimbledon quarters, and last time around, she was on the short end of a 6-4, 6-0 defeat against Serena, who’d also beaten her younger sister Urszula. Radwanska hasn’t had much success against the Williams sisters in her career, going 0-2 against Serena and 1-3 against Venus, so that doesn’t bode too well for her hopes of reaching a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time.

Another thing to note is that in this decade, every time Venus has made it to this point at Wimbledon, she’s gone on to the final.

#4 Elena Dementieva (-330) v. Francesca Schiavone (+230)

Schiavone has made a nice run thus far at Wimbledon, defeating three seeded players to make the Wimbledon quarters for the first time and reach this point in a Grand Slam for the first time since making the U.S. Open quarters in 2003. The veteran Italian is due for a run into the final four of a Grand Slam, but if she wants to make it happen, she’s going to have to play one of the best matches she’s ever played, if not the best.

Dementieva is gunning for her second straight Wimbledon semifinal and her fourth Grand Slam semi in the last five Grand Slams, and she’s looked every bit like doing it thus far. She hasn’t dropped a set yet, and the most she had to exert herself was in the first round against Alla Kudryavtseva, who she beat 6-4, 6-1.
