Tilting

I hear it from poker players all the time.

“I don’t tilt.”

“I have never gone on tilt.”

It’s been a long time for me, but I remember saying the exactly same thing in the past. There are varying degrees of tilt, some that are more extreme than others, but everyone goes on tilt. Over the years, I’ve read many books, listened to many podcasts and watched many training videos. They have helped me realize what a big leak tilting can be and have given me solutions that have been helpful in plugging that leak. You can have many goals in poker but one of them should definitely be to tilt less than your opponents. If you do so, you’ll have a big head start on them. This will enable you to deal with the bad beats, coolers, running bad over multiple sessions, etc. better than your opponents and you will profit in the long run.

When I think that I am tilting, I have found that I intentionally will take more time to make a decision than I normally do. I try to think whether or not tilt is influencing that decision. I also will not hesitate to leave a table right away if I sense that tilt will start having a big factor in my play. This is a huge leak for some players because they refuse to leave the table until they get the money back that they have lost. This is not very smart because they tend to make very poor decisions that end up costing them more money. Trust me, I’ve been there and have made the exact same mistakes.

If you think you don’t tilt or never tilt, you are kidding yourself. I would recommend that you review some of your sessions. Look at hands that you have played after some losing sessions or some particularly bad beats. Did you play differently than you normally would due to some of these circumstances. I’ll bet that many of you will find that you did. Learn from these mistakes and you’ll be well ahead of many of the opponents that you play.
