Subway Series

The last few years I was a big fantasy baseball and football fan and enjoyed all the stat collecting that went into it. It came from the time I was a kid and fantasized about being owner of a team and my friends and I would collect stats, trade players and go over every minute detail involved in the game. No team is more fun to fantasize owning than the New York Yankees especially after the debut of its new stadium and the consistent display of talent this team puts out year after year. This weekend kicks off a great event with the subway series and right now the Yankees would do well to justify their wonderful new digs and their massive salaries to their real owner, especially after their dismal performance in Boston this week.

This stadium actually has alot of empty seats this year and the Yankees falling out of first in their division is not going to help. The Yankees have had trouble with Boston but they had no excuse for being swept. Rodriguez was back, expensive new acquisition Mark Teixeira came into town riding a hot streak of seven home runs in his last 15 games, and the pitching could hardly have been lined up better – new imports A.J. Burnett and Sabathia and Chien-Ming Wang, who was supposedly on the comeback trail.

So what happens, Burnett and Wang couldn’t get out of the third inning in their starts, Wang pitched so badly, Girardi told him he has one more start to prove he should remain in the rotation.

Now the Yankees begin the famed subway series and they need to start winning which may not be a given after last years subway series.  Last year, the New York Yankees lost all three home games to the New York Mets in the final season at their historic park. Maybe the Yankees’ new hitter-friendly stadium could help them re-establish their home success against the Mets when the teams open the 2009 Subway Series on Friday night. The Yankees dropped all three meetings with the Mets  for the first time at old Yankee Stadium last season after winning 22 of the previous 32 contests, including two victories in the 2000 World Series.

The Yankees lost four of six to the Mets last year, marking only the second time they lost the season series since the advent of interleague play in 1997.

The Mets have not had alot of success in this series but the Mets are a team that can be hard to peg down. That Mets’ offense has been fueled mainly by David Wright’s five RBIs and .483 BA followed by Carlos Beltran bringing in his own four RBIs on two homers. Then there’s the opposite end of the spectrum. Gary Sheffield has recorded just three hits this month (batting .125 in June) and five other players are swinging for a BA of .250 or below.

Both teams will face left-handed pitching this weekend. The Mets will face southpaw pitcher, Andy Pettitte on Saturday for which they’ve logged in a .299 BA against. The Yankees will be facing All-Star slinger, Johan Santana in their quest to handle lefties (the Yanks are batting .293 versus lefties}

This should be a great and hopefully high scoring series.
