Summer is here and baseball is in full swing so I thought I might blog on a few trends I have seen so far this year. Wagering on baseball is all about finding trends and looking for value as even the best teams in baseball will end up losing alot of games. Parlays are an absolute must to avoid because even the best teams can have a pitcher have an off night. You can also be foolish and lay over -200 on a home team like I did with the Blue jays the other night and all of sudden the best pitcher in baseball, Roy Halladay, leaves the game with an injury and the Blue Jays end up losing.

Here are some interesting trends I have spotted from using statfox and reading some of the boards. The Los Angeles Dodgers have owned pro baseball’s best overall record through last week and they are certainly an interesting team to wager on. Joe Torre’s guys have the best home record (22-8), and the best mark against right-handed starting pitching (26-14). This stat on facing right hand pitching or left hand pitching is incredibly important as anyone who has played baseball can tell you.

The Dodgers are also second in the majors with a .280 team batting average, just one percentage point behind the league-leading Toronto Blue Jays though the Jays really cost me as they seem to be fading. They were humiliated at home by the Marlins this weekend and are now on my black list.

Of course, most people who wager on baseball say pitching beats good hitting, and the Dodgers are also leading both leagues in that category with a 3.63 ERA. The Seattle Mariners are second with a 3.74 ERA which sort of surprises me.

Other division-leading teams are also doing well in important statistical categories. I have made alot fo money on the Phillies this year and the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies possess baseball’s best road record at 21-8 and the best record against southpaw starting pitchers (15-5).

I will post more trends as they come apparent and one trend I believe is real important is over/under records for umpires. An umpire with a small or large strike zone can drastically effect an over/ under as well as the park the game is played in and even the weather. One place to watch for weather conditions and totals  are Chicago Cubs home games.  Wind direction is a major factor in totals with Cub home games.

All of these are important in figuring out and handicapping games and make sure you check out our odds pages and really line shop. Line shopping is an absolute must during baseball so keep a few accounts at various books and shop for the best line.
