Vikings a Good Futures Pick?

The Vikings are a team that has been decent the last few years, but has not gotten anywhere near the big game. The problem has been their QB situation and going into this season Vikings fans are holding their breaths once again, as there is a QB competition for the starting job between longtime question mark Tarvaris Jackson and free agent signing Sage Rosenfels. Neither of these two will instill fear in opposing secondaries, as Jackson has not proved he can be a full time starter in the NFL and Rosenfels has only looked good sporadically as the backup in Houston. Still, are things looking up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes?

There have been reports that the Vikings may contact so-called “retired” QB Brett Favre after the gun slinging QB was recently released by the Jets. There have been no formal talks, but Favre may be just the guy the Vikings need to get to the big game. Just one month ago at one of the more respected sportsbooks the Vikings had futures odds of 26/1 to win the Super Bowl and now there are at 18/1. The reason for their improved odds is the fact that the Vikings had a strong draft. They may have the steal in the draft in their first round pick of Percy Harvin., who fell to the Vikings with the #22 pick. He has some off the field issues, but he is an exciting playmaker, who can run back kicks and be a #1 receiver. These are both things that the Vikings sorely need. Last season the Vikings had the best running game in the NFL, led by rushing leader Adrian Peterson, but they only averaged 184.8 yards per game through the air. If Harvin can do some damage down the field and keep opposing teams from stacking the line to stop Peterson the Vikings can do some real damage. Add to the fact that if Favre is in the backfield he would automatically get respect from opposing defenses.

In the 2nd round the Vikings took OT Phil Loadholt, who should shore up the offensive line and they also drafted CB Asher Allen in the 3rd round. Allen needs to contribute right away, as even though the Vikings had the best run defense last season they were weak at defending the pass giving up an average of 215.6 yards per game.

Sure there are still a lot of questions in Minnesota, but if Harvin is legit like he was at Florida, the secondary can improve, and they can get Favre in the fold the Vikings may be a legit futures pick at around 18/1.
