Why do I play poker?
Someone posted this on one of the many internet poker forums. I decided to add my two cents worth. This sounds like an easy question. I couldn’t answer for anyone else, but I know the reasons why I play poker. Here they are, in no particular order.
1. I love playing the game.
2. I enjoy the challenges that are associated with always trying to improve.
3. The thinking and theory that is involved in every aspect of poker. Your table image, your opponents playing style and table image, the overall feel of the table, etc.
4. The interaction with others who also love the game though blogs, forums, home games, etc. I wouldn’t have some of the friends that I have now were it not for poker.
5. Money, money, money. It’s still amazing to me that you can make money playing a game on the internet.
These are the reasons I play poker and why I am continually motivated to play. I’m sure everyone out there has their own different reasons.
One of the problems that I have is that I really don’t put in enough hands. I could really increase my earning potential if I would just put in some additional hours. I really don’t have a set schedule for when I play poker. Right now, I only play on average about 20 hours per week. I really need to increase that to at least 30-35 to maximize my earning potential. It’s so easy to play for 30 minutes, win $400 and say that you don’t need to play anymore for the day. That is crazy. I should really be setting goals for hitting a certain number of hands played each month. I have never done that and it’s definitely something that I need to work on. What I need to do is set a certain time to play each day at least five days a week and stick to that schedule.
