Poker with the boys
I played some live poker at a buddy’s house last night. We ended up playing 4 tournaments with two $10 buyins and two $20 buyins. We only had 7 players this time, but it was a fun time. I was the chip leader for the majority of the first tournament but with some bad decisions on my part, and at least two bad beats, I ended up finishing out of the money (top 3). The big hand for that tournament was with 4 players left, the button went all-in, the SB went all-in over the top of him and I looked down to see JJ. I figured I was probably 50/50 against the SB and hoping that the dealer was just trying to pick up the blinds with a mediocre or poor hand. I could have folded and hoped that the short stacked button was knocked out, but I was thinking that I was definitely getting the proper pot odds if I was in fact 50/50 and if the short stack got knocked out, I would get third place money anyway. So I called. Dealer had A6 and the SB had AQ. Pretty good for me, no overpair. There were basically 2 aces and 3 queens in the deck that I needed to avoid. A Queen hit the turn and the dealer ended up getting 4 spades on the board for a flush. I was out in 4th.
I was the short stack for most of the second tournament. I was starting to build it back up when someone raised my BB and I see K9s. I felt like gambling, figuring that I could bluff at the pot if the flop was promising. The flop was K22. Well, I was definitely not going to be folding now.If I busted, so be it. I checked to him and he checked back. The next card was a blank so I went all-in (a little less than a pot-sized bet). He called with pocket queens. Excellent, a double up. Nope, a queen came on the river to give my opponent the winning hand.
I won the last tournament. There weren’t any real exciting hands except a hand holding pocket 4′s and flopping quads. The guy didn’t really make any chips on that hand since the other person was on a busted flush draw. I did slowplay pocket queens heads-up and ended up hitting a set on the flop, but he wouldn’t even call a min bet on the turn, so nothing really gained there. Overall, it was a pretty uneventful win. I guess the ones you lose stick out more in your memory.
I won $60 for the night, but that doesn’t really matter. It’s just always fun to hang out and play poker with the boys.
