Home game action
I played in a local home game last night that I play in about once every five or six weeks. It’s not a big game. You can bet and raise in $1 increments until the last two cards in each game when it goes up to $2. We normally play from about 6pm to 3am. The players are pretty bad, just there to play every hand and have some fun. They know basic strategy, but not much else. We play all kinds of games. Seven card stud, Five card stud, hold ‘em, baseball, follow the queen, deuces wild, etc. Most games we play are hi-lo split pot games. This means that the high hand and low hand split the pot. This definitely gets more money in the pot. I manage to eke out a small profit almost every time we play, typically anywhere from $50-$100 on average. The beats are pretty brutal in these games because almost everyone stays to the end on every hand. If you play good smart poker, you’re almost guaranteed to come out a winner.
On another note, I wanted to post a hand that I played the other night. I was playing some 50NL testing out some new aggression strategy and the following hand came up:
$0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold’em – 5 players
BB: $50.00
Hero (UTG): $24.55
CO: $44.55
BTN: $84.35
SB: $57.30
Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is UTG with K A
Hero calls $0.50, 1 fold, BTN raises to $3, 2 folds, Hero raises to $24.55 all in, BTN calls $21.55
Flop: ($49.85) 3 K K (2 players – 1 is all in)
Turn: ($49.85) T (2 players – 1 is all in)
River: ($49.85) K (2 players – 1 is all in)
Final Pot: $49.85
Hero shows K A (four of a kind, Kings)
BTN shows A A (a full house, Kings full of Aces)
Hero wins $47.85
(Rake: $2.00)
You might remember that I lost a big pot a few weeks ago with AA all in against AK. It was nice to turn the tables on someone else, even in a much smaller pot.
Of course, after this hand was over, I was berated in chat by the loser in the hand. He called me some things that I would rather not put in this blog. It was pretty funny. All I could do was smile.
