A home game tournament
I helped a friend of mine run a tournament at his home the other night. We were surprised when 35 people showed up. We had been expecting about 21 figuring that we could split up everyone at 3 tables. We ended up with 5 tables. As the players busted out of the tournament, they had the option to break off and play in a cash game. Most did this, but a few chose to either just go home or hang around and see what happened in the tournament. I think they were intimidated by the cash game and only felt comfortable playing a tournament since this is probably what most of them are used to seeing on television. I knew less than half of the players personally, but everyone was pretty nice.
I went out in 15th place. I only got 2 really playable hands in the 2 hours I played. I had to do some small bluffing just to be able to accumulate some chips to stay alive. I usually like to play a lot of hands and be a little aggressive, but I had to play tight because so many of the players here just played their own cards and were extremely difficult to bluff out of a hand if they had anything. To win a tournament like this, you just have to pick up cards.
The most interesting hand that I heard of was when a player holding AA ended up all-in against another player holding KK preflop. An ace and a king both hit the flop to give each player a set with the case king coming on the river to give the one player a miracle set of quads. Needless to say, the player who flopped the set of aces was quite stunned.
Overall, it was a pretty fun night. Hopefully, we can get this going again pretty soon.
