Will Tiger continue his Doral dominance?
After an early exit in his return to competition, don’t be surprised to see Tiger Woods return to his familiar winning ways this weekend as he tees it up at the WGC-CA Championship at Doral.
After an eight-month injury layoff, Woods made his much ballyhooed return at the Accenture Match Play Championship, and after a win over Brendan Jones in the first round, was upset in the second round by Tim Clark.
But as he is just about any week that he’s in the field, he’s the favorite, but there are certain courses that he knows his way around very well, to say the least, and Doral is one of those.
Tiger has thoroughly owned the WGC-CA Championship, which was known as the WGC-American Express Championship from its inception in 1999 to 2006. Out of the nine times that the event has been played (it had to be cancelled in 2001, due to 9/11), he’s hoisted the winner’s trophy six times. That’s a pretty nice win percentage for a number of sports, and on the golf course, it equates to pure and simple dominance.
While Tiger is the overwhelming favorite this week, don’t expect Geoff Ogilvy to just hand him the title. Ogilvy is the defending champion of the WGC-CA Championship, and he’s also had a hot start to the 2009 season. He won the season-opening Mercedes Benz Championship in January by six strokes, and he’s coming off of a win at the Accenture Match Play Championship, where he recorded a similarly convincing victory over Paul Casey.
So, the smart money’s on either Woods or Ogilvy, but there are many, many more talented golfers in this week’s field capable of walking away with the trophy and the big check.
