Sometimes, you just can’t put someone on a hand
I just finished a two hour online poker session. The following hand was one of last few I played. I thought it was very interesting.
Hold’em No Limit ($0.50/$1.00)
Table ‘Iapetus X’ 6-max Seat #5 is the button
Seat 1: Hero ($121.50 in chips)
Seat 2: UTG ($101.50 in chips)
Seat 3: MP ($124.10 in chips)
Seat 4: CO ($112.65 in chips)
Seat 5: Button ($148 in chips)
Seat 6: SB ($225.70 in chips)
SB: posts small blind $0.50
Hero: posts big blind $1
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Hero [Kh Kd] (I’m dealt pocket kings in the big blind. Excellent.)
UTG: folds
MP: folds
CO: raises $3 to $4
Button: folds
SB: raises $8 to $12
Hero: calls $11 (I decide to just call here to try and trap the SB)
CO: calls $8 (I don’t like another player in the pot, but let’s see a flop)
*** FLOP *** [Tc 6d 4s]
SB: bets $22
Hero: calls $22 (I probably should raise here, but I’m going to continue my trap)
CO: calls $22 (Wow, this really worries me. Did he flop a set?)
*** TURN *** [Tc 6d 4s] [Js]
SB: checks (The SB has given up it seems. I think he’s got AK or AQ)
Hero: bets $56 (The pot is $102 and I only have $31.50 left. I should have just gone all in)
CO: calls $56 (Because of the smooth call, I have absolutely no idea what he has. If he had a set, I would have expected him to re-raise me all in)
SB: folds
*** RIVER *** [Tc 6d 4s Js] [Td]
Hero: bets $31.50 and is all-in(no other choice, I hope he doesn’t have me beat)
CO: calls $22.65 and is all-in
Uncalled bet ($8.85) returned to Hero
*** SHOW DOWN ***
Hero: shows [Kh Kd] (two pair, Kings and Tens)
CO: mucks hand
Hero collected $256.30 from pot
SB said, “QQ here”
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot $259.30 | Rake $3
Board [Tc 6d 4s Js Td]
Seat 1: Hero (big blind) showed [Kh Kd] and won ($256.30) with two pair, Kings and Tens
Seat 4: CO mucked [6s 8s]
Seat 6: SB (small blind) folded on the Turn
My hand holds up and I win a big pot. I was shocked when I saw the CO’s hand. OK, I can see him calling the reraise preflop with two other players in the pot. If he flops a big hand, he might win a big pot. But on the flop, he should have folded. He had to know that at least one of us had an overpair to the board. Then he hits a flush draw on the turn, and bad players never fold a flush draw. Luckily, he bricked out on the river and I scooped the pot.
On a side note, you can see in the hand history that the SB told me that he had pocket queens. If true, I’m very impressed that he was able to fold them on the turn. Only a really good player would be able to do that.
