Limit poker, a totally different animal
I play no limit poker 99.9 percent of the time. However, from time to time, I’ll play limit poker for an hour or so. I can’t really give you a reason, it’s just something that I do.
Limit poker is a totally different game than no limit. In no limit, you can lose your whole stack at any given time. In limit poker, since the bets are a fixed amount, the most you can lose is the given bet at hand. Therefore, these games play a whole lot looser than their no limit counterparts. Following is a hand that will illustrate this.
Hold’em Limit ($1.00/$2.00)
Seat 1: UTG ($20.15 in chips)
Seat 2: Hero ($50.80 in chips)
Seat 3: Button ($50.00 in chips)
Seat 5: SB ($31.05 in chips)
Seat 6: BB ($44.00 in chips)
SB: posts small blind $0.50
BB: posts big blind $1.00
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Hero [Js Ts]
UTG: folds
Hero: raises $1.00 to $2.00 (I’m raising this hand every day)
Button[Qc 2s]: calls $2.00 (a weak hand, should be insta-folded)
SB[6d Qh]: calls $1.50 (another insta-fold)
BB: calls $1.00
*** FLOP *** [Qs Kc 8s]
SB: checks
BB: checks
Hero: bets $1.00(I’ve flopped a monster draw, open ended straight and flush draw, I’m a favorite in the hand and I’m going to build the pot)
Button: calls $1.00 (flopped 2nd pair, weak kicker)
SB: calls $1.00 (same as above)
BB: calls $1.00
*** TURN *** [Qs Kc 8s] [Kd]
SB: bets $2.00
BB: calls $2.00
Hero: calls $2.00 (I still have my big draw, I’ll just call and see the river)
Button: calls $2.00
*** RIVER *** [Qs Kc 8s Kd] [6s]
SB: bets $2.00
BB: calls $2.00
Hero: raises $2.00 to $4.00 ( I hit my flush, the board is paired so a full house is possible, but against these donkey’s, I figure my hand is good so I’ll raise)
Button: calls $4.00
SB: calls $2.00
BB: folds
*** SHOW DOWN ***
Hero: shows [Js Ts] (a flush, Queen high)
Button: mucks hand
SB: mucks hand
Hero collected $33.00 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot $34.00 | Rake $1.00
Board [Qs Kc 8s Kd 6s]
Seat 2: Hero showed [Js Ts] and won ($33.00) with a flush, Queen high
Seat 3: Button (button) mucked [Qc 2s]
Seat 5: SB (small blind) mucked [6d Qh]
Seat 6: BB (big blind) folded on the River
This hand tells a lot about limit poker. In the lower limit games, many players, if they catch any part of the board, are never going to fold. This is a huge leak in their game and they are guaranteed to spew money. As you see in the hand above, they are also very loose with their preflop calling standards.
The problem with limit poker that a lot of no limit players have is that you can’t ever bet enough to protect your hand. Since the betting amount is fixed, players are always finding reasons to call you. If you can deal with the brutal bad beats that hit you from time to time, limit poker is a good and less risky way to make money in poker.
