Checking the turn to appear weak

I played a short session of 100NL tonight. I played very tightly and managed a very small profit until this hand came up at the end of the session.

Hold’em No Limit ($0.50/$1.00)
Table ‘Amanda IV’ 6-max Seat #5 is the button
Seat 1: BB ($100 in chips)
Seat 2: UTG ($109.70 in chips)
Seat 3: MP ($100 in chips)
Seat 4: Hero(CO) ($94.45 in chips)
Seat 5: Button ($379.10 in chips)
Seat 6: SB ($104.65 in chips)
SB: posts small blind $0.50
BB: posts big blind $1
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Hero [7s 7d]
UTG: folds
MP: folds
Hero(CO): raises $2.50 to $3.50
Button: calls $3.50
SB: folds
BB: folds
*** FLOP *** [Qs 7h 6h]
Hero: bets $5 (Bingo! I’ve flopped middle set. I’ve got to bet to start trying to build a pot.)
Button: calls $5 (Excellent. He may have a queen, a middle pair like eights or nines, or maybe a flush draw.)
*** TURN *** [Qs 7h 6h] [Ac]
Hero: checks (I decide to check to appear weak or afraid of the ace.)
Button: bets $12.50 (My check worked. He probably thinks that I have given up on the pot and am going to fold to his bet.)
Hero: raises $23.50 to $36 (I decide to check-raise here. It looks really strong and I might blow the villain off a hand like KQ, but here it goes.)
Button: calls $23.50 (Excellent. He may have just hit two pair with AQ, or could have AK or AJ of hearts.)
*** RIVER *** [Qs 7h 6h Ac] [2h]
Hero: bets $49.95 and is all-in (If he hit a flush, so be it.)
Button: calls $49.95
*** SHOW DOWN ***
Hero: shows [7s 7d] (three of a kind, Sevens)
Button: mucks hand
Hero collected $187.40 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot $190.40 | Rake $3
Board [Qs 7h 6h Ac 2h]
Seat 4: Hero showed [7s 7d] and won ($187.40) with three of a kind, Sevens
Seat 5: Button mucked [Ad Qc]

Sometimes, a check on the turn when you are extremely strong can end up making you the most money. Many players take my flop bet to possibly just be a continuation bet. In most cases, it probably is. Now, when I check the turn, I appear to be weak and most players will go ahead and bet any hand thinking that they can get me to fold. In this particular case, we both had big hands and the all the money was destined to get in the pot.
