Bankroll Management
The number one key to being a successful poker player is bankroll management. The general rule is to have anywhere from 20-30 buyins for the level that you are currently playing. Since I’m a no limit player(meaning you can bet up to the whole amount that you have at the table at any time), I will base the buyin requirements on that game. Some examples are:
10NL(5 and 10 cent blinds): $200-$300
25NL(10 and 25 cent blinds): $500-$750
50NL(25 and 50 cent blinds): $1K-$1.5K
100NL(50 cent and 1 dollar blinds): $2K-$3K
200NL(1 and 2 dollar blinds): $4K-$6K
400NL(2 and 4 dollar blinds): $8K-$12K
The amount of buyins that you have for a particular level within the range that I mention above should be totally based on your comfort level as a player. If you don’t ever want to have to put any more money into poker than you already have, you should definitely use the 30 buyin rule. However, if you have more disposable income and don’t mind putting more money into your poker experience, you can probably start closer to the 20 buyin level.
The reason a player needs to be properly bankrolled is to be able to avoid the extreme variance that can come while playing poker. It doesn’t matter how talented a player is, there are absolutely going to be some rough spots. Even the bad players are going to get lucky and beat you from time to time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten all my money in as a 92 percent favorite or better and lost. Trust me, it happens. As much as this can sting, it really is in your long term best interest for that to happen from time to time. Think of it this way. If these bad beats never happened, the bad players would leave the game, never play again and it would only be the tough players playing against each other. Trust me, you don’t want that.
