The Eve of Disaster
Good afternoon sports fans. It’s Christmas Eve but I’m such a hard worker I’m here for you anyway. Tonight we only have one game on tap but it’s an important one. In the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Notre Dame (-2.5) travels to take on the home town team in the Hawaii Warriors. The Irish come into this game at 6-6 and needing a win to avoid another losing season and perhaps save their coaches job.Â
Charlie Weiss has been under heavy fire latley as his team has struggled again this year. Notre Dame has not discussed his future but with a loss tonight, I’d say Weiss is finished. He took over the play calling duties early in the season after giving them over over the summer. The offense has had trouble moving the ball consistently mostly due to turnovers. While quarterback Jimmy Clausen is much improved from his freshman season, he has been interception prone. He is coming off a poor performance against USC where he threw for 41 yards in a 38-3 loss. If the Irish have any hopes of salvaging this season, they must limit turnovers and rely on their running game.
But the Irish have more than a struggling offense to overcome tonight. Notre Dame has lost their last nine bowl games. Their last victory was over Texas A&M in the 1993 Cotton Bowl. That is the longest bowl losing streak in college football history.Â
Hawaii will present a challenge tonight as they come off an impressive effort against 13th ranked Cincinnati in their last game. The Warriors have been improving after a 1-3 start. They need to sure up their protection however, as they allowed the most sacks (48) in the country this year. Tonight I think they give the Irish all they can handle and come away with a victory that punctuates Notre Dame’s downfall. Charlie Weiss coaches his last game for the Irish in a 31-21 loss.
Merry Christmas everyone and we’ll see you tomorrow for a great NBA doubleheader.
