Football, Basketball and Baseball…Oh My!
Hello sports fans. It’s the night before the night before Christmas and we’ve got a full plate of sports. Tonight the college football bowl season officially begins in my book, as the undefeated Boise St. Broncos take on the TCU Horned Frogs in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. The Boston Celtics look to become the first team in NBA history to start 27-2. And perhaps the biggest story of the day comes fron the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers snuck in and signed Mark Teixiera to an 8-year, 180 million dollar contract.Â
Lets start with the yanks. Picking up Teixiera came as a surprise to me as I thought that the Red Sox and Nationals were the two teams in line for the marquee free agent. But the Yankees swooped in and offered the most money and longest contract, something that has notched them many high profile free agents in years past. That strategy hasn’t worked out very well in recent years, as they haven’t won a World Series in seven years and missed the playoffs last year. But I think this year will be different. Teixiera and Sabathia make what were the Yankees weaknesses, their strengths. Teixiera adds a combination of gold glove defense at first base with hitting for average and power from both sides of the plate. And Sabathia brings a durable and dominant starting pitcher to a now strong starting rotation. The yanks now have the four highest paid players in basebal with the two previously mentioned along with A-Rod and Jeter. I think these acquisitions take the Yankees back to the World Series but I’m not positive they win it. The Cubs and Yankees start and finish the first season at the new Yankee Stadium, and the Cubs have the last laugh.
Tonight in Boston, the Celtics (-13) take on the Philadelphia 76ers and with a win, the Celtics will be off to the best start in NBA history. A win would put them at 27-2 and one better than the Chicago Bulls team that finished 72-10. Their has been much talk as of late on whether or not the Celtics are the best team in NBA history. And while they will win this game comfortably and make history, believe me they are not better than the Bulls teams of the 1990s. They may be better for three quarters, but nobody that has ever walked the Earth could stop Jordan in the fourth quarter, and this Celtics team would be know different. They win big tonight but remain a distant second to his Airness. Celtics win 108-91.
And finally in college football, the Boise St. Broncos take on the TCU Horned Frogs (-3.5) in the Poinsettia Bowl. Boise head coach Chris Peterson is looking for a second undefeated season in three years for his team, and could finish in the top ten twice in that same span. In order to do that he will have to beat a familiar foe, Gary Patterson from TCU. Peterson and Patterson have known each other for 20+ years, ever since both were at UC Davis. Patterson was a 26 year old linebacker coach while Peterson was a senior quarterback when they first met. Tonight they will show one another why each has his program in the college football spotlight. Boise comes in with the 13th ranked offense in the nation, but will square off against TCU’s 2nd ranked defense. I think Boise St. rekindles some of the magic that led them to a victory over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl two years ago. Boise wins a great one 34-31.
Well that will do it for me sports fans. The Dragon is home for the holidays, but I’ll talk to you tomorrow when I get my grandmother’s locks of the week.
