ACC Going Bowling
The ACC set a record this college fooball season, sending ten teams to bowl games. Thus far the conference is 1-0 after Wake Forest beat Navy this week. Today they will be deep into their bowl schedule as an ACC team plays in all three of the bowl games today. North Carolina and West Virginia (-2.5) are already under way in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte. Butch Davis has got the UNC program on the rise but it will be tough to beat WVU quarterback Pat White in his last college football game.
At 4:30 this afternoon, the Florida State Seminoles (-6) take on the Wisconsin Badgers in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Florida. This game is a classic matchup of speed versus power. The Seminoles (a.k.a. criminoles) have an incredibly fast defense and like to spread the field on offense. The Badgers on the other hand like to use their massive offensive line to establish their power running game. The team that is able to impose their will on this game and force the other into their style of play, should have the upper hand in this game. And that team will be Florida State I believe. FSU sophomore quarterback Christian Ponder returns from injury and should provide a spark for the Seminole offense. And on the other side of the ball, safety Myron Rolle leads a very fast and hard hitting defense. Rolle, a junior, is likely playing in his last game for Florida State. He has already graduated and is probably going to turn pro after this season. He has also been given a Rhodes scholarship which affords him the opportunity to study at Oxford in England. And in what could also be his last game, FSU coach Bobby Bowden is sure to have his guys motivated. While I think Bowden will be back next year, his time is nearing an end as FSU has signed defensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher to an extension expecting him to take over by 2010. In the end, the Seminoles superior speed and talent win out in this one. FSU 27-17.
In the nightcap out west, the Miami Hurricanes travel to play the California Golden Bears (-10) in the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco. California has ended the season strong, especially running back Jahvid Best. He has over 500 yards rushing in his last two games. And he faces a Miami defense that has been killed by the run in their last two games. Miami gave up over 400 hundred yards rushing to Georgia Tech and then over 200 yards rushing to N.C. State in their last two. I think the Hurricanes defense will be very motivated and do a better job tonight, but I don’t think it will be enough. Miami’s freshman quarterback Jacory Harris will be making his second career start because of Robert Marve’s suspension due to missing classes. Harris is very talented an will make some plays, but with that will come big mistakes. I think Cal takes advantage and wins a close one, 28-24.
Good luck sports fans and I hope everyone had a great Christmas. The Dragon will see you tomorrow and we’ll talk about San Diego’s improbable run to the playoffs.
