Rivalry Weekend
Hello sports fans, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed all the nail biters in the NFL. The Cowboys blowout of struggling Seattle and the Titans massacre of the winless Lions were no surprise. But the resounding comeback of Donavon McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles caught the NFC West leading Cardinals off guard. McNabb threw for four touchdowns and Brian Westbrook had four of his own in their 48-20 win. But the Eagles may be relegated to the role of spoiler due to the quality and number of teams ahead of them in the playoff race.Â
But today and tomorrow are all about the rivalry games in college football. Most of these games will have a significant impact on both conference and national title implications. Texas took care of business yesterday against Texas A&M and actually has to hope for Oklahoma (-7.5) to beat Oklahoma St. in the Bedlam Series game tomorrow. But a win is not the only thing on the mind of the Sooners. Coming into this week one spot behind Texas in the BCS rankings, style points may be the deciding factor on who goes to the Big 12 Championship. Oklahoma comes in averaging 59.2 points and 598 yards per game since losing to Texas 45-35. The last two games between the two in Stillwater have been decided by a combined 9 points. But after last years 49-17 win, and this years title implications, I expect the Sooners to roll past Oklahoma St. 48-21.
In Tallahassee the Florida St. Seminoles welcome the fourth ranked and smoking hot Florida Gators. Florida (-16.5) has won four in a row over FSU including a 45-12 blowout last year. This year the Gators have won five straight games by 28 points or more with three of those coming against ranked conference opponents. FSU is coming off of their best win of the year, a 37-3 win over Maryland. But the Gators have way too much fire power and too much on the line to lose this one. Florida rolls again, 47-17.
In Athens the Georgia Bulldogs look to salvage a season that started at number one but won’t finish there. They welcome the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets who boast the number four rushing attack in the nation. Georgia (-7.5) has no shot at a conference title while Tech needs Virginia to beat Virginia Tech to get into the ACC Championship game. I think Georgia’s disappointing season continues as Tech pulls off the upset 27-24.
And here in Raleighwood the N.C. State Wolfpack look to become bowl eligible for the fisrt time under coach Tom O’brien as they take on the Miami Hurricanes (-1.5). State has won three in a row after starting 2-6, and are coming off of a 41-10 beatdown of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Miami enters this game after a 43-21 loss to Georgia Tech ended any hopes they might of had at an ACC Championship. State continues their improbable run under future heisman winner Russel Wilson and win again, 27-21.
Top ranked Alabama (-14.5) welcomes the struggling Auburn Tigers to Tuscaloosa. Too much at stake for the Crimson Tide and I think Tommy Tubberville is nearing the end of the road at Auburn. The Tide rolls 35-10.
Out in sunny southern California the USC Trojans (-32) are set to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Charlie Weis is done for at his alma mater and this annihilation won’t help. The spread is iffy because USC will run the ball so much, but I’m going with the Trojans 48-14.
South Carolina and Steve Spurrier travel to Clemson (-1) to play the Tigers in Death Valley. Clemson has been on a roll since Tommy Bowden left and they continue at home 31-21.
And don’t worry Tar Heel and Blue Devil fans, basketball season is here. But first your football teams must square off in Durham. The Tar Heels are angry after getting embarrassed against N.C. State, and the Devils are running out of steam. Carolina rolls 34-17.
It should be an incredible day tomorrow and I’ll be talking at you then with all you need to know about the Redskins upset of the Giants on Sunday. The Dragons out, holla at your boy.
