A common football line looks something like this:

The last box on the right shows the total. The total bet allows you to bet on the total points scored in the game, by adding both teams tallies. There are only two options - you can either bet that more points will be scored in the game or fewer than this number. If the actual score is exactly the number, the bet is a push - your stake is returned... You neither win nor lose the bet. The total reflects a number the oddsmakers think will cause half the money bet will be placed over and half will be placed under.

Some sportsbooks also offer total bets for each quarter and half. In other words, they offer total lines for the number of points scored in that quarter or half. For example, the total for the 2nd quarter may be 10.5 points. Starting from the first play of the second half until halftime, every point scored counts towards the total. If you accept the bet, you have to decide whether you think more than 10 or 10 or fewer points will be scored in that quarter.

Advice for Betting Totals:
It is human nature to bet the over. When bookmakers make lines, they dont report the total number of points they think will be scored. Instead, they pick a number which they think will cause half the bets will be above and half below the given total. This almost always leads to artificially high numbers. As much as 55% of total bets that win are 'under' the total!

Consider the weather! Games that are very cold with driving winds and snow are more likely to be lower scoring. Also, some stdiums are known for swirling winds which can eliminate the big bombs and quick strikes which inflate the score.

Early in the season you typically see lower scores as defenses take less time to get in sync than offenses. But that has to be balanced with injuries, freshness of players, and gametime temperature.
