Yahoo! Sports - NFL - Denver Broncos News
Latest news and information about the Denver Broncos.

 Wed, 19 Nov 2008 15:15:32 PST

  • Suspect in Williams death indicted in 2nd slaying (AP)
The man accused of killing Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams now faces murder charges in another slaying. Police and prosecutors said Wednesday Willie D. Clark was indicted in the December 2006 shooting death of Kalonniann Louisa James Clark. Prosecutors say they don't believe the two were related.
  • Broncos Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Broncos' defense isn't going to be confused with the Ravens' or the Steelers', but it is making progress.

The Broncos were pleased with the job they did against Atlanta, holding the powerful Falcons rushing game to 3.3 yards per attempt and allowing only 20 points in a 24-20 win Sunday.

Denver has worked at improving the run defense after a horrible start, and it paid off Sunday.

"To play the rushing defense we played against an excellent running offensive football team, I was very pleased," coach Mike Shanahan said.

The Broncos brought an eighth man in the box on most plays to contain Michael Turner. The powerful running back had a pair of touchdowns but managed just 81 yards on 25 carries, ending up with a rather quiet day.

  • John Lynch retires after 15 years in NFL (AP)

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos safety John Lynch gestures as he announces his retirement from NFL football during a news conference Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 in Tampa, Fla. The 37-year-old was a nine-time Pro Bowler for Denver and Tampa Bay, finishing with 1,277 tackles, 100 pass breakups and 26 interceptions in 224 regular-season games.

No more bone-jarring tackles for John Lynch. The hard-hitting, nine-time Pro Bowl safety retired Monday, saying it was time to begin a new phase of life after 11 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and four more with the Denver Broncos. He felt so strongly about the relationships he built with both clubs that he decided against stepping down in the colors of either team.

  • Broncos stay afloat thanks to reinforcements (AP)
Some deft draft-day decisions are helping the Denver Broncos win games even as they keep losing players. The Broncos (6-4) have forged a two-game lead over San Diego in the AFC West thanks to rookies and reinforcements who aren't wasting any time making their mark in the NFL. John Lynch, who made his retirement official Monday after four Pro Bowl seasons in Denver, said he was glad to see the...

  • Broncos rookie Larsen starts at FB and LB (AP)
Spencer Larsen made history in his first NFL start. Larsen, a rookie, became the first Denver player to start on offense and defense in the same game when he opened Sunday's matchup against Atlanta as the team's middle linebacker and fullback. He also opened the game on special teams, too. Larsen's role as a two-way starter on offense and defense was a secret this week.
  • Broncos rally for 24-20 victory over Atlanta (AP)

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith yells from the sidelines during an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos in Atlanta, Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008. Denver won 24-20.

The Denver Broncos have come up with all sorts of ways to deal with their injuries, from starting a player on both sides of the line to relying on a guy with plenty of baggage. It's working out just fine. Jay Cutler threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Graham with 5 1/2 minutes remaining, the Denver defense held off Matt Ryan's last-gasp drive and the gritty Broncos rallied for a 24-20 victory...

  • Larsen starts on both sides of ball for Broncos (PA SportsTicker)
Spencer Larsen hit the trifecta in his first start for the Denver Broncos.
  • Broncos hold out Young, Bailey (AP)
Running back Selvin Young and cornerback Champ Bailey were inactive for the Denver Broncos' game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Young and Bailey were held out with groin injuries. Young has only one carry since Oct. 5. Young's injury left fullback Peyton Hillis as the probable starting running back for the Broncos.
  • Like old times: Elam welcomes Broncos to Atlanta (AP)
Before every game, Jason Elam envisions himself lining up for a game-winning field goal. That scenario played out plenty of times with the Denver Broncos. Come Sunday, he'll imagine beating the team where he established himself as one of the best clutch kickers in NFL history. Nothing personal. It's just that Elam now kicks for the Atlanta Falcons, his new team after 15 years in the Mile High City.
  • Broncos' once mighty backfield slowed by injuries (AP)
So much for the notion that you could plug anybody into Mike Shanahan's system and he would rush for 1,000 yards. Injuries and inconsistency have quashed that theory. The Broncos rank 18th in the NFL in rushing, have just one 100-yard rusher in their last 12 games, and they're well on their way to a second straight season without a 1,000-yard runner, something that happened just once in Shanahan's...

  • Bell returns to Broncos with no baggage (AP)
Forget Rudi Johnson's swiped luggage. In Mike Shanahan's eyes, Tatum Bell carries no baggage. "I judge Tatum by what he's done here. Tatum did a great job for me," the Denver Broncos coach Wednesday said after signing Bell to a one-year deal 2 1/2 months after his ignominious departure from Detroit. • Broncos place RB Torain on IR, sign Haynes (PA SportsTicker)
The Denver Broncos on Monday placed running back Ryan Torain on injured reserve and signed free-agent running back Alex Haynes.
  • Different gloves, times for Carlos and Smith (AP)
The men who famously raised their black gloves for racial equality might have been offended. Instead, Tommie Smith and John Carlos were pleased. Pleased because they believe Brandon Marshall's heart was in the right place. Pleased because 40 years after Mexico City there's a new statement a new generation can make that they once would never have dreamed possible.
  • Week 10 NFL picks: Joy of sacks for Giants, Steelers (SportingNews.com)
The New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers are duking it out every week for the NFL team lead in sacks, and it's no surprise they are on the short list of Super Bowl 43 favorites.
  • Marshall denied chance to honor Obama on the field (AP)
The possibility of a yellow flag curtailed Brandon Marshall's red, white and blue tribute to President-elect Barack Obama with a black-and-white glove. After scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute left in Denver's 34-30 win at Cleveland on Thursday night, the Broncos' star receiver pulled the glove from his pants.
  • Cutler puts Broncos on his shoulders (AP)
Jay Cutler may or may not have a stronger arm than John Elway, as he so famously asserted last month. One thing's for sure, though: Cutler certainly has some pretty broad shoulders. And he's going to need them. Denver lost its third tailback in four days Friday when it was confirmed that rookie Ryan Torain tore a ligament in his left knee and is done for the season.
  • Report: Broncos RB Torain out for the season (PA SportsTicker)
Rookie Ryan Torain has apparently become the most recent running back added to the Denver Broncos' injured reserve list.
  • Jackson enjoys big moment with parents (Yahoo! Sports)
Rams RB Steven Jackson insisted that his Southern-raised parents watched the election with him.
