Yahoo! Sports - NFL - Cleveland Browns News
Latest news and information about the Cleveland Browns.

 Wed, 19 Nov 2008 15:22:05 PST

  • Browns' Lewis not running on empty (AP)
Cleveland running back Jamal Lewis is quickly approaching two round milestones: 30 years of age and 10,000 career yards. He won't hit the big 3-0 until Aug. 26, when the self-described "gym junkie" will be preparing for his 10th season as a pro. Barring an injury, Lewis, who once gained 295 yards in a game, will become the NFL's 24th 10,000-yard man sometime in the next few weeks.
  • NFL Briefs (AP)
Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow sustained a sprained right shoulder in Monday night's win over the Buffalo Bills, an injury unlikely to keep him out for an extended period. Winslow, who played through a painful injury to his left shoulder last season, got hurt while catching a 16-yard pass that set up kicker Phil Dawson's 56-yard field goal in a 29-27 win.
  • Browns TE Winslow has sprained shoulder (PA SportsTicker)
Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow has a sprained right shoulder that could put his availability in doubt for Sunday's game for Sunday's game vs. the Houston Texans.
  • Browns Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Browns tried to give a game away against Buffalo, but they didn't quit.

And because Cleveland hung in there, it was able to beat the Bills on Monday night in Buffalo, thanks to a career-long 56-yard field goal by Phil Dawson.

The Browns blew leads of 13-0, 23-13 and 26-20, tackled horribly and played some bad football. But when they were down by one point late, Brady Quinn completed just enough passes to get the Browns to the 39-yard-line, and Romeo Crennel had just enough guts to try the long kick.

The win will not get the Browns to the playoffs, but it might represent a step toward ensuring Crennel gets at least one more season in Cleveland. The Browns seemed dangerously close to splintering following Jamal Lewis' comments that some of his teammates quit...

  • Browns get kick out of win in Buffalo (AP)

In this Nov. 17, 2008 file photo, Cleveland Browns' Phil Dawson celebrates his 56-yard field goal against the Buffalo Bills during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. The Browns won 29-27. They needed the longest kick of Phil Dawson's career and another wide-right miss by Buffalo to get it, but the Cleveland Browns won a game they nearly gave away.

Inches from infamy, the only thing that stopped the Cleveland Browns from making unwanted history was another miss off the foot of a Buffalo kicker. In jeopardy of becoming the first NFL team to blow leads of at least 13 points in three consecutive games, the Browns survived with a 29-27 win on Monday night when Bills kicker Rian Lindell pushed a 47-yard field goal to the right -- a hauntingly...

  • Browns' Winslow to have MRI on shoulder (AP)
Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow will have an MRI on his right shoulder after injuring it in the closing minutes of Monday night's win over the Buffalo bills. Winslow was hurt when he was tackled in front of Buffalo's bench while making a 16-yard reception that set up Cleveland's game-winning field goal.

  • Dawson's 56-yard field goal sends Browns to win (AP)

Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron watches his team from the sidelines during the second half of an NFL football game against the Cleveland Browns at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008. Cleveland won 29-27.

Phil Dawson wasn't about to quit during Cleveland's latest fourth-quarter meltdown. Turned out, neither did the rest of the Browns. With a confident nod to coach Romeo Crennel, Dawson went out and calmly hit a career-long 56-yard field goal with 1:39 left that sent Cleveland to a 29-27 win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night Dawson's fifth field goal of the game capped a wild finish.

  • Browns' Crennel: "I know I'm not a quitter" (AP)

In this Oct. 13, 2008, file photo, Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel watches from the sideline during an NFL football game against the New York Giants in Cleveland. Stung and personally insulted by running back Jamal Lewis' claim that some unnamed Browns quit in the fourth quarter of last week's loss to Denver, Cleveland's embattled coach disputed Lewis' belief, defended his leadership skills and said he's certain his team has not yet given up on him or a season spiraling away.

Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel says he felt insulted by comments by some of his players that teammates quit in last week's loss to Denver. After the Broncos scored 21 points in the fourth quarter for a 34-30 win on Thursday, Browns running back Jamal Lewis accused some unnamed players of quitting.

  • Some Browns tagged quitters (AP)

In this Nov. 6, 2008 file photo, Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel walks though smoke during team introductions before an NFL football game aganst the Denver Broncos, in Cleveland. They've faded from the AFC playoff picture, and now there's not much for the disappointing Cleveland Browns to do but play out the remainder of their schedule. With seven games left, coach Crennel's biggest challenge could be keeping his locker room from splitting in two.

Back from a rare, football-free weekend, the Cleveland Browns resumed a season that has faded from promising to problematic. Their record says they're losers, and upon returning, they had to answer charges that they're quitters, too. Following Thursday night's demoralizing loss to Denver, running back Jamal Lewis accused some unnamed teammates of giving up.

  • Browns hurting after second loss in 5 days (AP)
In the aftermath of Collapse Part II, running back Jamal Lewis stood at his locker in the Cleveland Browns' shellshocked locker room and vented. For the second time in five days, the Browns had let a double-digit lead at home disappear and dissolve into another season-defining loss. On Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens rallied for a 37-27 win over Cleveland.
  • Cutler rallies Broncos past Quinn, Browns (AP)
John Elway isn't the only Denver quarterback capable of breaking Cleveland's heart. Jay Cutler pulled off this fourth-quarter comeback, turning Brady Quinn's big night into his own prime-time showcase. Cutler passed for a career-high 447 yards and threw three touchdown passes in the final 15 minutes Thursday night -- the last an 11-yarder to Brandon Marshall with 1:14 remaining -- to rally the...
  • Quinn better equipped as Browns' QB than Anderson ever was (SportingNews.com)
Some are decrying the Browns' decision to make Brady Quinn the starting QB over Derek Anderson. But the move has been a long time coming, and Quinn looks to be the better man for the job.
  • Indecision on quarterbacks will haunt Browns for years to come (SportingNews.com)
GM Phil Savage's failure to trade Derek Anderson when his value was highest stifles his team's development, including that of Brady Quinn. Result: another lost season in Cleveland.
  • Browns without Steinbach (AP)
Browns quarterback Brady Quinn lined up for his first NFL start behind an offensive line missing starting left guard Eric Steinbach, who sat out Thursday night's game against the Denver Broncos with a rib injury. Steinbach, a Pro Bowler last season, pulled a muscle in his rib area in Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
  • Browns set to hand off to quarterback Brady Quinn (AP)
On his first play of practice as Cleveland's starting quarterback, Brady Quinn caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage before stepping up and launching the ball deep down field. As he approached the goal line, wide receiver Braylon Edwards, whose season has been defined by drops, had to accelerate to get his hands on the ball.
