Football Teasers

A football teaser is very similar to a parlay wager. In parlays, you select more than one side wager and put them together in one bet. The advantage is that the payoff goes up nearly exponentially – but the cost is all bets in your parlay must win. A teaser adds a bunch of points to make winning parlays easier. Of course teasers have lower payoffs, but you could add more teams as there is a better chance of winning!

Teasers for football are typically sold as 6 point, 6.5 point, and 7 point teasers. Whichever you choose, the number of points is added to your team’s total before being compared to the spread. Or, you could see it as reducing the spread for a favorite or increasing it for an underdog.

Teasers let you win MORE of your bets because they give you a huge advantage on the pointspread!

Here is a typical payoff table (courtesy VIP.com Sportsbook)

Football Teaser Odds
Teams 6 points 6.5 points 7 points
2 10/11 5/6 10/13
3 9/5 8/5 7/5
4 3/1 5/2 2/1
5 9/2 4/1 7/2
6 6/1 11/2 5/1
7 9/1 8/1 7/1
8 12/1 11/1 10/1

This chart shows the payoff as a function of win percent. Realize these are long time averages. Just like how flipping a coin has a 50% chance of heads, 50% of tails, it is unlikely you will alternate heads and tails with every flip. If you win 75% of your teasers, you will still have winning and losing streaks.

There are two important things to gain from a chart like this: #1 - Break Even Point. No one bets on sports with the intention of losing money. Look at the chart to see where the line crosses 0 line on the Y axis. This is the win percent you need to acheive to break even. The line that crosses furthest to the left has the lowest break even point. 4 Team teasers, at these pay levels have the lowest break even point.

#2 - Slope of the Line. The slope of the line tells you how much more you can expect to win when you win a higher percentage. Whichever bar is on top at the win percentage you expect to achieve (not hope to achieve!) is the best bet for you. Higher multiples of chosen teams generally pay more - once you get above the break even point.

With the break even point so close together, unlike the curve for parlays, I recommend playing large teasers. For minimal more risk you get a much bigger payday. Also, while 6.5 and 7 point parlays always look like worse bets, remember you will win more of these games. Going from 6 points to 7 in football is a big advantage and will cause a few more pushes - something not considereded in these stats. If a teaser pushes, the game is removed from the teaser - the teaser is still live, but with one fewer team.
